East will bid the notrump game as she has a "good" 16 HCP hand. We think most will fail at their game.

The first eight tricks will be easy for East to find. South will likely lead a club. If East plays the ♣10 from dummy she will have her first trick. She has three hearts and two diamonds and she knows she can force at least two spades. That brings her to the total of eight.

When declarer plays on spades the ♠8 will appear from the South hand. This card makes North♠ spots in spades good and North will continue spades when she takes her ace. Declarer will be in the awkward [position of not being able to win a ninth trick.

If she tries clubs, South will win four club tricks. If she continues spades, North will win at least three spade tricks. North always has a diamond trick. South will always have a heart trick and two clubs.

If East bids clubs a second time South will show her hearts in response to partner's Stayman inquiry and the partnership will end in the heart game.

West will lead a club. This establishes declarer♠ ♣K as a trick however it will not affect the final result as South must lose ine spade, one diamond and one club.

This may be a flat board of the night.

EW will have a simple auction and get to the heart game after a Stayman inquiry.

This is an interesting layout as declarer always has 10 tricks and the defense always has three. Regardless how the play goes on this board. Declarer has not suit in which she can fabricate another trick.

There is not possibility for an extra trick.

East shows her has as does her partner and they end in the notrump game. South will lead a high diamond.

As is typical of misfitting hands, declarer has communication difficulties.

She can force out the ♣A and take the heart finesse. These plays will give her at least nine tricks.

Let's say she wins the opening lead in her hand with the A. She plays on clubs. South will eventually take her ace and continue diamonds. Declarer is in dummy for the last time and must try the heart finesse. She will lead the Q. North must not cover. If she does declarer will score four heart tricks bringing her trick total to 11. If North plays low declarer can repeat the heart finesse, eventually dropping the king, however she has no entry to dummy to cash the long heart.

Most Wests will open their hand. This is reasonable however they will have a difficult time at their third bid. East will show her spades and then bis the Fourth Suit creating a force. (A bid of 3♠ by East is not forcing and she may play there.) West cannot rebid her diamonds nor can she comfortably rebid her clubs. Without a heart stopper she cannot try 3NT although we can envision some making this bid.

West will bid out her hand pattern and West will opt for the spade game.

We expect most declarers to win 12 tricks.

East will win the opening lead and her plan is to ruff one heart and discard losers on dummy's clubs. So she will win the opening lead, cash two high hearts and ruff a heart. As she has no convenient entry to her hand we can see East cashing the ♣A and continuing with the queen. Ir North plays low East may discard a heart. She can continue clubs discarding a diamond. If North covers East will ruff, draw trump and use a diamond to get to dummy to discard her losing diamond on the good clubs. This line will win 13 tricks for declarer.

Some Easts may take the club finesse immediately thinking they will be able to discard losers on
dummy's clubs. This is definitely the case however East will have lose one trick to North. On this line East will only win 12 tricks for a bottom board.

East will open and West will reasonably transfer her partner into spades. East will bid the notrump game as she has two five card suits and expects one of them to be a source of tricks.

South will lead a diamond and declarer will have three diamond tricks. She sees she has five clubs and one heart but most importantly she has the tempo on the board and can afford to fabricate a spade trick of two.

We can see East leading a spade and finessing the ♠J from dummy. When this wins she will return to her hand and repeat the finesse, this time playing the ♠K if South plays low. If South takes her ace East will later get to dummy with the ♣A to cash a second spade trick.

We expect most to make 12 tricks in notrump.

South must lead her K to inflict the most damage however this is not going to happen unless North doubled the Transfer Bid during the auction. On the lead of the K, East must duck at lead one round of hearts to sever communication between the North - South hands.

East will lead a spade which dies declarer no good since she must play the ♠Q from dummy.

Declarer has holes in every suit and will go about her business of building tricks. Since she's in dummy we think her next play will be to try the heart finesse. This will lose to East who is endplayed unless she continues hearts.

Declarer will win the second heart trick in dummy and now try the club finesse. This too loses. However declarer has 10 tricks in the form of three spades, three hearts, three clubs and one diamond.

Any effort to create another overtrick will result in the defense winning three tricks so although declarer may create more tricks for herself she will nto be able to cash them all.

West will get very excited when she hears her partner open. However when East shows a minimum and no interest in exploring for slam she we go quietly and settle for the heart game.

There is little to the play of this board. The defense will score two aces.

Declarer will draw trump, establish clubs and then discard a diamond on dummy's long club. (Yes a three card suit can be long!!))

East has a huge hand and will not be deterred from getting to slam. She needs little form her partner.

There are several roads to 12 tricks. South will likely lead a minor. East will call for the ♣9 or ♣J from dummy if that suit is lead. Now she will play a spade to her hand and ruff a spade, she can ruff a diamond to ruff another spade dropping the ♠K. (Her spades are now good.) She will draw two rounds of trump, dropping the Q.

As quickly as that East will have 13 tricks.

If South leads a diamond, declarer will follow the same line to come to 13 tricks.

At times, bridge can be an easy game.
