Our evening starts with a routine spade game. East will open and West will show a Limit Raise. In today's game there are several methods to do this. Many pairs use Bergen Raises. Regardless, Everyone should get to game.

Declarer should come to 11 tricks. IF South lead a diamond, East will call fro the queen from dummy. It appears that she now is on route for 12 tricks however she needs to ruff two diamonds. With North holding three spades declarer cannot both draw trump and score two diamond ruffs in dummy.

Without the diamond lead, East will lead a diamond toward dummy for the same result. She will win two diamond tricks and ruff one diamond. Regardless how the play goes, she will lose one diamond.

Declarer must also lose one spade trick. She will get to dummy to lead a spade. This will lose to the ace. Declarer should return to dummy to play a second round of spades. When North plays low declarer should finesse the 10. The probabilities favor spades splitting 3 - 1 so taking the finesse is the percentage play.

IF the defense plays hearts, declarer can win dummy's ace and discard her losing heart on dummy's clubs prior to playing trump.

It's not every day you hold a combined 26 HCPs and have little play for a game. This however is one of those times.

North may help declarer as she will likely lead a diamond against the notrump game. This gives declarer three diamond tricks. She also has one spade and three hearts off the top. Declarer needs to manufacture two tricks.

She can get a trick by leading a spade toward dummy. North will correctly play low. Declarer will get to dummy once. Let's hope she unblocked her hearts so she can cash dummy's Q.

This gets her to eight tricks. If she plays clubs the defense can thwart her from winning a club trick. This however is unlikely. North will have a count on the West hand. From the play in diamonds, North knows that West started with six diamonds. She knows that West started with three spades (she denied four in the auction) and two hearts. So declarer has two clubs. When North wins her K she can return a club and South will win two club tricks. South can cash her good heart.

The defense will score one spade, one heart and three clubs.

South will jump to the notrump game.

West has a difficult lead. The offense has bid both her suits. A spade lead would have been a possible choice however the offense bid spades as well.

We can't imagine West leading a diamond so after a bit of thought West may lead dummy's second bid suit. Declarer will win her ace and attack spades. She should come to four spade tricks regardless how she plays the suit.

After running the spades declarer will advance the Q. This will give her two tricks in that suit. In the end she will have 10 tricks.

East will open 1NT and West will check for a major suit fit using Stayman. When East shows hearts rather than spades, West will invite game. East of course will accept.

South will lead a club which will give declarer a third trick in that suit.

Declarer will get to dummy to try the diamond finesse. This loses however it does generate a third diamond trick and another entry to dummy. When South wins her Q she cannot play another round of clubs lest she give declarer yet another club trick. So South will have no choice but to play a heart. Declarer can win, unblock her diamonds, get to dummy and lead a high spade toward her hand. South will win and again she have a difficult return.

Pressure will be on South to get the defense right. They can get two spades, two hearts and one diamond if declarer takes the above line. We don't see many other options for declarer however it will be up to South to play the heart suit correctly. (If South plays the J at some point she wil give the suit away and East will make her contract.

We expect a variety of results on this board.

We don't like leading unsupported aces however unless East leads her A it will disappear. There is no reason for her to lead it on this auction.

Her likely lead is the J. Declarer will win in hand and play a spade to dummy to lead the Q. Regardless how East plays declarer will not have a heart loser. She can draw trump, cash her high diamonds, ruff a diamonds and return to dummy with a high spade to discard her clubs on dummy's good diamonds.

East will lead a diamond since the auction tells her that South holds four spades. Dummy's 9 will hold the trick. Declarer will next play the J for a finesse. This will build an additional spade trick bringing the total to seven - three spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club,

East may shift to a heart and if declarer plays low from dummy she will win a second heart. Needing one more trick she will now play a club toward dummy, East will play her jack which declarer will cover to establish a second club, this will bring her total to nine tricks.

The auction above will not occur at any table. Most players use Four-suit transfers so West will begin by transferring to diamonds. East with KJ will accept and West will begin cuebidding to get her side to the diamond slam.

If North is on lead she will try the K, Declarer will win and draw trump. She must find a parking spot for her losing heart and she must do so prior to playing clubs. So with no other choice she will cash her high spades, play a spade to the ace and hope for a 3 - 3 split. When the spades behave declarer can discard her losing heart and concede a club to make her slam.

South transfers and then bids the notrump game. North corrects and place the contract in spades.

Everything works for declarer. She will win the opening lead, draw trump and lead a diamond toward dummy. With the J dropping declarer will lose one diamond trick.

She will at some point lead a jeart toward dummy and and the A is onside so she will lise one heart.

She will easily make 11 tricks.
