All pass

Three years ago almost no one would have made a Weak Two Bid with the North hand because of the spade holding, Today many more players will venture a 2 bid just to jam the auction. There are still the minority however the point is that more and more players are making this kind of bid.

East will double for takeout and South may elevate the preempt especially as she thinks her opponents have a spade fit. (Little does she know that her partner is holding spades.) West is content to pass and the auction will likely end with North declaring in hearts.

East will lead the K as it appears to be a safe for her side.

Indeed it is as North will come under much pressure if she must continue ruffing clubs. It looks like she will control of the hand. If she runs out of trump the defense will score some club tricks. On this layout North cannot draw trump and keep control.

Her best bet to make her contract si to take what the defense has given her and that is to play the board on a crossruff.

So she will ruff the first club and immediately play a diamond. East will win. (She may cash her A however this will not prevent declarer from making her contract.) Let's say East continues clubs. North will ruff and take the spade finesse, cash the other spade and the good diamond. she can lead a high diamond. If West ruffs she will over ruff and spade a spade, ruffing high in dummy. She can ruff yet another club.

She should score two spades, one spade ruff, two high hearts, one diamond and three club ruffs.

Pass3NTAll pass

We think most Norths will carry the partnership to game. Not because they have a great hand but rather because at matchpoints it would be a disaster to not bid the game when everyone else is.

Disaster is a good word for this board, as far as South is concerned.

West will lead the J, declarer winning in hand.

Not having very many entries to dummy, declarer may well table the A followed by the queen. West suspects that declarer is trying to create an entry to dummy and will hold up until the third round of spades. West can continue hearts. safely, declarer again winning in hand.

South will now play a club to the K in dummy. East will take her ace and return a diamond. (She sees the good Q in dummy. She doesn't want to play clubs as that would give the suit away.) West will take two diamonds and clear the suit, South winning yet again..

So far, South has won two spades, two hearts and one diamond. She has two top clubs. She has two plays for an eighth trick. She can cash her top clubs and play a club to East who must return a heart to dummy's queen. Her alternate play is to exit a club. East will win but must return withe a club to South who will win two more clubs to a heart to dummy when declarer will win a heart and have the remaining club.

This is not a happy board for NS.

East shows her strength but West puts on the brakes for her side as she is looking at a lot of losers. She has a mild fit for partner and an ace but the shortness in partner's second suit is not a plus on this board.

South will lead a high club. No other lead will be better for the defense. Declarer's plan is to ruff two clubs in dummy. So declarer will win the opening lead, ruff a club and lead the J from dummy finessing if North plays low. South will take her ace and return a diamond. East will win and ruff her second losing club. She can repeat the heart finesse playing the 9 from her hand to draw a second round of trump, leaving one high diamond out. She can now cash her winning spade, heart and club. South can take her J at her leisure. However it will be the last trik for the defense.

All pass

Our North player is aggressive and opens her hand. Some will choose to pass but in the modern game most will open. Afterall, the hand has two suits and almost all the values are in those suits.

By the same account East will open to get her side into the auction and to suggest a lead to partner. Regardless of the auction, South will end as declarer and she will be in 3NT

West will dutifully lead a heart. South can count seven winners in four spades, two hearts and one diamond. She must develop two tricks to bring her contract home. There is no point in ducking a heart if East started with five hearts as West will always be able to continue the suit. However if East has six hearts there may be some benefit so South will duck th first round of hearts. The defense will continue the suit.

She will make the obvious play of placing the Q on the table. East is in the hotseat as she must make the bridge play of ducking. If she wins her K South will win the return. She can get to dummy in spades and cash five diamond tricks to score two overtricks. East can see this so we think the duck should be a play many Easts will find.

South can now do some bridge thinking too. If the K were in the West hand West would most likely have covered the Q. So South places the K in the East hand. (Also, East must have almost off the missing high cards to have a bid.) East would not have ducked with two diamonds (say Kx) nor would she have ducked if she had four diamonds(K10xx or K9xx) as she would have two diamond stoppers. So South should deduce that diamonds are going to split favorably for her and are sitting 3 - 3.

However she does not have the entries to establish and run the diamonds. Besides, if she loses a diamond, three hearts and one club she will be down.

So after East ducks the first diamond South must shift gears and play to try endplay East. On this layout she will be guessing but she will succeed. After the Q holds the trick she will cash her good heart and four spades and exit a club. Notice what happens to East on the fourth spade. She must find a discard. If she throws a club she will bare her ace and if she discards a heart she is throwing away a winnerr. East will win but must return a diamond to the board giving declarer two diamond tricks and her contract.

The bridge gods are not smiling on EW on this board. East has a notrump opener and West will invite. East has a "good 16" and will accept. We consider a "good 16" to be a hand with either a five card suit or most of the values placed in aces and kings. This hand rates as a "good 16."

The defense will be quick. South will lead a spade. North will win her queen and return the suit. South will take her good spades.

East will commiserate that at least every other East will suffer the same fate.

South may take a rosy view of her hand and invite the heart game. She has 10 HCPs and a sidesuit which partner might be able to establish. If she does invite North will accept and bid the heart game.

East does not have a happy lead. We think for lack of anything better she will try lead a spade. North will win her J and play a spade to dummy. She will then lead a heart toward her hand. West should play low.

After she wins a trick with the K she will play trump from her hand as she has nothing better to do. West will win perforce and return a diamond, establishing a trick in that suit for the defense.

She will cash her high clubs. East will ruff but this will be the defense's third and last trick. The heart game will come home for those who bid it.

East has a great hand and she wants her side in game so she starts slowly. South too has a great hand and shows it by bidding 1NT. West is the first person in the rotation with nothing but three hearts for partner. (Yes she has spades but since partner has hearts it's unlikely that East also has spades. She does know that if anyone has spades it will be her opponents.) At this vulnerability she might jam the auction. (Bidding 3 accomplishes two things. It lets her partner know about the hand strength and her heart support.)

North's bid is crucial to the direction of the auction.

If North bids 3NT the partnership may never ind their diamonds. If she tries 4 they now have a chance of getting to 6 although that may not be the final contract.

Regardless of what North chooses to bid, East will carry on to 4. If NS bid 5 and they will East will try 5 if she has a chance and if the auction has gotten to 6 the east with all those hearts will continue to 6.

East does have two aces however she does not expect to be able to cash the A. North is bidding as though she has a heart void. (She did bypass 3NT. There must be a reason for her decision.) The vulnerability also suggests that bidding the heart slam will be a great sacrifice for her side.

Against the heart slam South will lead a high diamond and the defense will take two tricks in the suit. Eventually they will get one heart and one club.

Declarer's plan is to ruff two clubs in dummy. South can afford to lead hearts once in an effort to cut down on club ruffs. However she can't successfully lead them a second time without giving up a heart trick. It's a tradeoff on this layout. She will lose a heart trick and gain a club trick. Note that if North held the Q then the defense would have gained two club tricks but on this afternoon's layout South will drop the Q on the third round of clubs and declarer's J grows to be a winner.

EW will stay out of the auction as their opponents will find the heart game.

There is no reason for North to not try the heart finesse which will allow her to pick up the suit. With the hearts splitting 4 - 1 the hand will be reduced to playing in notrump. However the partnership have the high cards in most suits and lose only two aces to make 11 tricks.

Some South will not use Stayman to inquire about a major suit fit. Holding nine HCPs opposite a partner who has shown 20 and a flat hand they decide that notrump will score better at matchpoints than playing in a suit. That is the case on this board.

Some North players may use New Minor Forcing to inquire about a spade suit in the South hand. Many experienced players will skip a spade suit and bid notrump immediately with a minimum hand. This is a good tactic at matchpoints if the partnership will end in the notrump partial. The defense will not know that South is holding four spades. That is not the case on this board.

West has the first problem to solve on this board, and that is what to lead. Her opponent have bid both her suits. It doesn't seem right to lead a spade from her holding. (And in fact it isn't a good lead on this board.) So West may lead a club. Declarer will play low from dummy. East will take her club trick and return a low club establishing the suit even though she has no entries.)

This creates a scary situation for South. She cannot afford to lose a trick to East however she has little choice in some of her finesses. If East has the K she will have an entry. East may also hold the Q.

Upon winning the A we think South will lead a diamond toward her hand. When East plays the K South greets that as both good news and bad news. She has a few top diamonds and can lose a trick in the suit to establish a fourth diamond. This will bring her count to eight tricks.

When West wins the fourth round of diamonds she will have to play a spade or a heart. Declarer will play either suit correctly for her ninth trick. She can then forge another trick in the other major.

Most declarers will come to 10 tricks on the board.
