4All pass

We have a first board with many possible outcomes. After 1, East should pass with the too-ugly-to-mention heart suit. South, with an ace, could consider a bid, but nothing stands out as a great choice so pass is reasonable. West would like to bid an unusual 2NT, but in balancing seat 2NT shows 19-20 points and a balanced hand. After 1 North might double, but 1 is more descriptive and partner will know that North has a decent hand to compete opposite a hand that passed as responder. East bids 3 since the hand is too balanced to jump to 4. The South hand has improved dramatically: North likely has at least five clubs and the A is definitely helpful. As a result the hand is worth a 4 call. West will bid 4 and now North might bid out to 5 or try to defend as shown here. It's a close call.

The play should be straightforward: A ruffed, followed by a couple of rounds of trump and a diamond finesse, but which way? Declarer needs to put herself in the defender's shoes. If North started with AK and AK she would have tried spades first to give partner a ruff. Knowing that South has one of those cards should be a pretty strong indication that North has the Q. If West guesses that correctly, she will take 12 tricks.

This is a hand ripe for systemic accidents. After 1NT Pass 2, South should make a lead-directing double. There are many good systems for the notrump bidders to play in this situation, but they all require partnership agreement. It is important to know who has a club stopper if it can be determined. Without discussing it, I would guess to bid 2 directly. East can do an insurance double-check with 3 and when West repeats hearts, I would try 4 rather than 3NT. This is a big hand for systems as if East-West played Puppet Stayman , they could bid to 4 more easily.

If South fails to make a lead-directing double, North will get off to a potentially disastrous spade or diamond lead. On a club lead, declarer will likely lose two clubs and a diamond, but a spade or a diamond could give declarer an extra discard. Declarer will need to do some work to ruff a club on those leads, but should be able to work it out.

The East hand should balance with something despite the vulnerability. This hand works well for DONT or Meckwell or Capelletti or... Here, I showed DONT although the responses would be the same with any two-suited bid that starts with 2. When partner balances over 1NT, you don't want to force them too high since they borrowed some of your values to begin with. That said, West's good diamonds and overall solid hand is just too strong in support of spades or hearts not to invite (Note: when I showed this hand to Larry Cohen with my auction, he cringed. "Don't hang partner for balancing!"--maybe my love of thin games should be saved for IMPS rather than matchpoints) . Technically, West could have made a different call over 2 to show a hand with support for both majors, but that's the sort of tertiary conventional bid that can lead partnerships astray.

Against 3, South will lead a heart. East just needs to guess how to play the spades. Finessing the notrump bidder for the jack seems promising since that hand is more likely to have length in spades as well as points.

All pass

If you get dealt a hand like East's and preempt only 3, you deserve to have your opponents bid and make 6NT. Over 4 life is much more difficult for your opponents. After South's 4 bid, North doesn't have good options so might just pass. An important thought for East: you made the opponents guess, don't bail them out now! I'm sure there are Easts who now stuck in a 5 bid, but doing so gives opponents two bites at the apple, either by giving them an opportunity to find a better contract or by extracting a big penalty in 5x.

Against hearts, West will lead a diamond and then East needs to guess what to do. There's no particular reason for East to find a club switch (the only way to stop 12 tricks) at trick two instead of trying to cash a second diamond. As a result, most North-Souths will take 12 tricks. Will anyone bid 6? Probably some will--the nature of preempts is that it forces the opponents to guess and some might guess to go high. The slam needs some help (something good happening in spades and misdefense) so I won't be sad to be in 4.

4All pass

Competitive auctions can Feature many close decisions that influence the outcome. Here the auction could easily start Pass Pass 1 or Pass 1 Pass 2. The prevailing modern standard is to open the East hand, particularly not vulnerable. South's choice is less clear at this vulnerability, but I like the working AQ to offset the ugliness of the heart suit. West's hand has a lot of value in spades so it's closer to a limit raise than a weak one. North should find a raise to game and then West has to decide what to do. My boss, Larry Cohen , says 4 in a competitive auction should be alerted as a transfer to 4 by the opponents. Not-vulnerable against vulnerable makes 4 attractive as both a possible making spot and also a possible sacrifice. South might double, but everything is a guess.

South leads a heart and declarer ruffs the 10 to lead a spade towards hand. After South wins the A, she might just continue spades as the safest escape. The best play in diamonds (barring information) is to lead the Q or 10 and double-finesse North for either honor. While South is more likely to have the K I don't think the odds shift enough to ignore the percentage play. Against 4, good defenders will make declarer guess the diamond position (winning the first trump to play a low diamond). I expect more declarers make 4 than go down.
