South opens in third seat mostly to make life difficult for West who must be the only player at the table with an opening hand.

Unfortunately for West she has no action available over the 1 so she will pass in tempo. North will show spade support and the auction will end with NS declaring spades.

East will lead the J.Declarer will play the queen from dummy. The defense will only win four tricks on this layout as declarer has one heart loser, one diamond and two club losers.

3NTAll pass

The bridge gods favor EW on this deal. East will open and West will jump to the notrump game.

East has to make a decision whether to pass or bid 6NT. She has some useful information from the auction. She knows West holds at least four clubs. (West skipped over the major suits so she doesn't have four of either. West also did not support diamonds so East knows that West does not have four diamonds.) West also holds 13 - 15 HCPs for her bid.

There is little point is asking for aces as East holds three of them. East might consider asking for aces and then for kings however if West has 13 - 15 HCPs and no aces she must hold several kings and queens.

Some Easts will bid the slam and be rewarded for their bold decision.

Regardless of the contract the play will be the same. Declarer will win North's opening lead to lead a diamond from her hand. It matters not whether she finesses or plays for the drop (the inferior play.) Declarer will win six diamond tricks. She will dislodge the A to win two clubs. She has enough spade and heart winners to bring her count to 12 tricks.

The defense cannot attack clubs without allowing declarer to win two clubs. If let to her own devices declarer can only win one club trick.

This is significant as it gives declarer time to establish her spades and diamonds.

The defense will win their two aces and at most one club trick either because it's the last trick or because they've attacked clubs and allowed declarer to win two club tricks.

South will lead a high club in a race to establish a club trick for the defense. Declarer will win, and lead a spade toward dummy's queen.

South has no answer. She can win her K and play another club. Declarer will win, unblock the Q, draw trump ending in her hand to cash the A discarding a club from dummy. Declarer can now play on diamonds to win her tenth trick.

Note that declarer must be patient and not draw trump until she's made the spade play. The only entry back to her hand is a trump so she must wait.

West has an easy 4 call. Her partner has shown values, (3 is a bit of an overbid however is does convey the idea of spade length.) West has a singleton honor but it may be enough. West also considers whether her side has a spade slam. She has a great diamond suit which should be a source of tricks. She has heart shortness.

After some consideration we think West should pass because of her heart shortness. She can win the first heart however once her K is spent she cannot control hearts.

West's decision to not go forward on this board is a good one as trumps split poorly for declarer.

Declarer will win the opening lead. (Discarding a heart from her hand as South leads a diamond.) She will play theK to learn of the bad split for her side and that she has two spade losers. She will unblock the A. She can come to her hand with a club to play a club toward dummy's queen. The defense will win the two spades we'd already mentioned and one club.

If South overruffs declarer on the play of diamonds, she will be trading tricks as declarer will later cash high spades.

At one time no one would open the South hand but our game has changed and today almost all Souths will open.

Regardless, EW will get to the notrump game.

On our auction, North will gladly lead a club. This gives declarer three club tricks and food for thought.

Looking at her combined diamond holding she will win five diamonds 75% of the time by leading toward dummy's AJ10. (That play will fail today and declarer will only win four diamond tricks.) From the auction East is certain that most high cards are with South.

However declarer should consider that regardless of the number of tricks the diamond suit can produce she will need some spades to get to nine tricks. West is also aware the she will need entries to her hand so she plays on spades.

We think the solution to her dilemma at the table is to start on diamonds and later when she is in dummy with the A she should play spades.

So the play will go a club to West's jack followed by a diamond to dummy's jack, losing to South. West will win the club return to play the Q

At this point declarer will likely go down.. South will take her A and exit a club. Declarer will win. Her spade suit is blocked. South has a diamond trick coming. North has the A as an entry and good clubs.

East will lead a heart. Since she has no outside entry to her hand, she leads a low heart hoping that when her partner gets in the heart return will allow East to run her suit.

The theory is great however n practice West will not gain the lead. Declarer has an easy road to 11 tricks.

Declarer will win the opening heart lead. She will test the diamonds. The friendly split gives her five diamond tricks. She has two clubs and three spades.

Double dummy, we see that declarer can win a twelfth trick by finessing the 10 however at the table it's very difficult for declarer to decide upon that play.

West will open but have nothing to say at her second turn to bid.

East must decide whether to show two card spade support or bid her clubs at the three level. We think most will choose to bid spades, ending the auction.

It appears that West must lose two spades and one diamond but that's not the case. North will lead a diamond. South will win and continue the suit. Although West can trump, the defense is shortening her spade holding. When she tries to draw trump the defense will win and continue diamonds. The assault on declarer's trump will result in the defense winning three spades and one diamond. When the defense plays a third round of diamonds declarer will trump but must abandon drawing trump. She must cash her winning hearts and clubs allowing the defense to score their remaining spades separately.

East has a huge hand and gets her side into the auction with a double. We think most Souths will open with 2, a reasonable action with that holding.

West jumps since she was forced to bid and she wants to show that she has more than eight HCPs. East bids the heart game.

North will lead a diamond. West has an interesting choice of plays. Under normal circumstances West would play low from dummy creating a trick for the Q. However from the auction West knows that South holds six diamonds and therefore the 4 is a singleton. If West plays low, South will win the trick and give her partner a diamond ruff.

West's choice is interesting as it turns out that regardless how she plays she will have 10 tricks. She can take her ace and exit a diamond. (Her plan is to ruff two diamonds in her hand.) West must be careful to dislodge the A before she goes about ruffing diamonds lest North discard clubs and later get a club ruff. So she should now play a club toward dummy. She will win the return and ruff a diamond high in her hand. She can play a heart to dummy, noting the fall of the 9 from the South and and ruff a second diamond. West can now draw trump and cash her good spades and clubs.

If West plays low on the opening lead, South will take her K and give her partner a ruff. Declarer will win the return, play a club toward dummy and follow the above line to get to 10 tricks.

There is little to the play and auction of this deal. (That said there will be a few pairs who finish in 3NT rather than 4.)

West will win the opening lead, unblock the J, draw trump ending in dummy and run the diamonds discarding clubs. She will come to 11 tricks. Interestingly if North cashes her two high clubs to start the defense declarer will win 11 tricks. Also, if West discards spades on dummy's diamonds she will win 11 tricks.

  1. New Minor Forcing

West will use some form of New Minor Forcing depending upon partnership agreement to ask East whether she has four hearts or three spades. East will she hearts, West will bid the notrump game. East can conclude that West holds five spades else she would not have used new minor forcing however with two spades East will not bid the spade game.

South too has been listening to the auction and she knows that West has five spades and East has four hearts so she will lead a diamond or a club.

Unfortunately for the defense the diamond lead solves declarer's problem and East will win three diamond tricks. (She has two spades, two hearts and two clubs giving her an easy route to nine tricks.)

On the opening club lead East must locate the J to make her contract. (Declarer can play for spades to be 3 - 3 however that is an inferior line than trying to locate theJ.) But East has other problems as well. She must dislodge both red aces. She must do that in the correct order lest the defense establish clubs and use the second red ace as an entry to those clubs. On this layout East must play diamonds before hearts. (After East has ducked one round of clubs South will be unable to continue the suit.)

For the most part declarer is on a guess to find the J as there are no clues from the play of the deal.

At the table we expect most declarers to fail at their game contract if South leads a club.

South has several lines to 10 tricks depending upon how the defense chooses to act.

Let's look at the suits independently to get an idea of how declarer might proceed.

She can win the A and take the ruffing finesse. After she's ruffed a second heart she will have three heart tricks. Or she can take the heart finesse, ruff two hearts to again come to three heart tricks.

She has one diamond trick and she can ruff two diamonds in dummy.

She has one club trick.

She has two top spades and a third spade if she leads a spade toward the jack in her hand.

The timing will depend upon the defense. Let's say West leads a spade, Declarer must win in dummy, cash a high heart, ruff a heart, play a spade to dummy to play the Q. East will cover and declarer will ruff. She will play a diamond to dummy. Declarer can ruff a diamond to get to dummy to cash the last heart.

The best the defense can do is that when ruffs in with the Q she can play a club to make declarer guess the club position. However is South discards clubs on dummy's hearts no guess will be needed. (Note that West cannot effectively ever play a diamond. Nor can West play a club.)

At the end of the day we expect South to make her contract although play will differ from table to table.
