North does not have a bid at her first turn so she will pass in tempo. South will reopen with a double. North will show her hearts and South must decided what to do.

She has the values to try notrump and if she does she will end in 3NT. She holds two excellent heart cards for her partner however she does lack a third heart. If she bids H North will bid the heart game.

The heart game is easier to make. as the offense will lose one spade (regardless how the suit is played,) one heart and one club.

If South is declaring in 3NT she may make her contract. West will lead a club which declarer will win. Declarer can place all the high cards in the West hand. (Or at least she suspects that almost of the high cards are with West.) South can count one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and one club.

If she is desperate and tables the A West will drop her king and South can score her ninth trick without surrendering the lead.

Ed Antosz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
   1
PassPassDblAll pass

South will open her hand and her side will end in trouble. West has no bid over the 1 opener. North will pass and East will reopen with a double. West can't pass quickly enough as she would love to defend the doubled contract.

North, with the weakest hand at the table will determine the final contract. She will either redouble (asking partner to pick another suit) or she will random;ly pick one of her majors.

EW must now judge whether they have a game or will they get a better score defending. They vulnerability suggests that this is a close call. Perhaps they have a vulnerable game.

It turns out that if NS end in one of a major the defense will score eight tricks for a +500. this is not as good as a vulnerable game. If North remains silent and South is playing in diamonds it will not be pretty for their side as South will only win three tricks.

All pass

South opens and rebids to show her minimum. North might prefer to be in spades however she has no interest in game. So most Norths will pass and hope partner can use their suit.

South has the same nine tricks in spades as in notrump so the notrump game will score better.

West will likely lead a heart. South will win and take her nine tricks. If West leads a diamond the defense should untangle the suit and score four diamonds. Even if they block the suit and only take three diamond tricks declarer will concede a trick at the end.

A simple auction gets NS to the notrump game. East will likely lead a spade. Declarer will win. She can see that taking the immediate club finesse will give her n overtrick. Playing other suits will not be as productive as the defense will continue spades and subsequently establish two tricks for themselves in the suit. Declarer can't establish a second heart without giving up tricks in the suit. That will not result in a good matchpoint score.

If East leads a club the defense will establish two tricks in clubs but declarer will still be limited to 10 tricks.

Expect many different auction on this board. Some Souths will try 1 at their first turn in fear of losing the spade suit. Others will show their longer clubs. Some adventurous Wests will interject a 2 bid. Others, daunted by the vulnerability will remain silent. (We think West should be at least one king better to enter the fray.) To complete our discussion we think some Norths will bid diamonds at their second turn intending to pattern out their hand.

In the end South will be declarer in the notrump game.

The big question on the board is "Does South want to play poker?"

West will lead a spade (regardless whether she'd bid the suit.) South will win. She can count 10 tricks off the top. She has one spade, two diamonds and seven clubs.

If West has remained silent during the auction we can see South looking for an eleventh trick.. The game is matchpoints and extra tricks are worth their weight in gold.

So South may play a club to dummy and lead a heart toward her hand, hoping to steal a trick if the ace is with East. (If no one at the table knows that West has six spades, South just might try this play.) If course, if East hops up with her ace and returns a spade the defense will take six tricks and South will get a bottom. If East plays low South will score her K and record a cold top.

As we'd said above, this play is more poker than bridge.

All pass

This will be another board with wild and different results.

Many Wests will open their hand 1. She style in today's game is to be aggressive at matchpoints. West has nine black cards. She has a rebid when partner responds and she is ready to show her weak opening.

However on this board North will pass quickly. Partner will also pass and South will reopen with a double which North will convert to a penalty double by passing.

East would love to bid hearts however the rue is that we don't rescue partner. (Besides, there is no guarantee that hearts will be better than spades.)

The defense will score two top spades, on top heart and two diamonds. Then each time West is forced to trump a heart one of North's spades will be promoted to a winner. So the contract will fail by at least two tricks. At the table we can envision the contract being down three.

If West passes then North will open 1 and the partnership will end in 3NT.

Declarer will have eight trick and have to work to produce the ninth. She has two spades and three hearts off the top. She should be able to manufacture three diamonds. Now if the defense attacks clubs declarer will have her ninth trick. She cannot be the first to play the suit since if she does then the defense will win four club tricks on this layout. Similarly if the defense plays hearts she will have her ninth trick.

She can manufacture a ninth trick in hearts if she leads a heart toward the South hand and finesses the 9 however this is not a realistic play at the table with this holding.

West has a better then minimum opener and shows this on her second bid. She'd like to have an additional queen however we like the bid more than 2.

If West bids 2 at her second turn, East will bid either 2 or 2NT. If she bids 2NT West will raise her to game, If She tries 2 West may bid 2NT. We don't see West bidding 3NT as East has shown a minimum.

South will lead a heart, the unbid suit. She has length and an outside entry so she has visions of setting the contract.

East will win and attack diamonds. Unfortunately for her side NS will win the race to establish tricks. North will win a diamond trick and return a heart, establishing that suit for South. (Note that is East leads a diamond toward dummy and plays the king the first time she will win the trick. Now if she returns to hand to lay another diamond, South must play low to allow her partner to score her queen and return a heart. This is an easy duck. She questions why declarer has played the second round by coming to her hand and leading toward dummy.) The defense will score three hearts and two diamonds.

East does no better if she decides to play on clubs. She can play the suit backwards by leading the J toward her hand but she will win at most three tricks in the suit. She can play a diamond toward the board and rise with the king the first time. But all this will only bring her to eight tricks.

South bids the hand she is holding and West doubles for penalty. She holds 10 HCPs opposite a partner who opened. So she knows that North has little in the way of high cards. Surely EW can punish South for stepping int their auction.

North is the hero of the partnership and comes in to save her partner. Okay, we've repeatedly said that we don't save partner however this is an exception. North's hand is of no value at notrump however playing in clubs it may be worth a few tricks. (If the partnership system allows North may bid 2 to play.)

North will lead a club and unfortunately for the defense they can establish the suit but North ahs no entry to her hand.

West will prevail. She will dick a second round of clubs of the defense continues the suit. Upon gaining the lead she will duck a diamond. This will give her five diamond tricks, one club and two spades. Her ninth trick will wither be a spade or a heart.

It's interesting to note that North's opening lead must be the J to set the notrump game. On that lead the defense will win three hearts, one club and one diamond. Don't expect this to happen very often.

  1. Exclusion Blackwood for
  2. 1 or 4 Keycards (excluding )
  3. King ask
  4. 2 kings excluding hearts

As soon as South opens North has visions of a spade slam. She has an excellent hand and needs very little from partner to fill the gapes. She shows spades and South shows her extra strength and length by jumping to 3/ (This bid is not forcing but highly invitational.)

North has a difficult second bid. She would like to rebid her spades however no number of spades would be forcing. So she shows her diamonds.South shows a preference for spades.

This is a difficult slam to bid if your partnership does not have the tools. Exclusion Blackwood comes up seldom but when it does it's worth it's weight in gold.

North jumps to 5 as Exclusion Blackwood. She is asking partner for keycards outside of hearts. South shows one. North asks about kings and learns her partner has both the K and the K.

Knowing they have a spade fit, North can bid the grand slam in spades.

East will lead a high heart and North will claim with 15 top tricks.

There are other sequences to the grand slam. One is for South to open 1NT and North to transfer to spades, then use Blackwood to inquire about Keycards.South would show two with the queen of trump. North could then ask for kings. If the partnership plays specific kings South would show the K. North would ask about the K by bidding 6. South would bid 6NT to show the K. North could now bid 7NT.

The defense may help declarer on this board. North may lead a spade, the unbid major.

If West decides that the Q is with South she has an easy play for 12 tricks. She will win the opening spade lead, get to dummy and lead a spade toward her hand . If she makes two spade tricks she will have 12 in all.

Without the spade lead, the suit looks to scary for declarer to attack it. Not knowing the layout declarer fears she may lose two or even three spades. That would not be a good matchpoint score. So without the spade lead we think declarer will cash some clubs and diamonds and possibly play a fourth round of diamonds to setup an extra diamond. She will win 11 tricks on this line.

North will open and end by declaring in the notrump game. East had planned to bid diamonds however as soon as she hears North make that call she will pass. From the auction it becomes very clear to East that her partner will not contribute much to the defense.

Many pairs play Inverted Minors . Their auction will differ from the one above however North will still be declarer in 3NT.

East has a difficult opening lead. Her best suit was bid by declarer and she knows her partner has very few high card points. On this board her best lead is a low diamond. If declarer takes the trick the defense will score one spade and two diamonds. If declarer allows West to hold the opening lead, West will shift to a heart and the defense will score one spade, one heart and two diamonds as East will revert to diamonds when she wins her K.

Interestingly the best line requires .East to make an unusual lead given the information available to her and for declarer to win the opening lead rather than duck.

If East's opening lead is a high diamond the defense will only win tow tricks, one diamond and one spade. North will win her diamond ace and return a spade. East can win but the best she can do at this point is to take her diamond trick. Note that this establishes two diamonds for declarer. Nor does a heart continuation help the defense. If East exits a spade or a clun declarer can play on diamonds herself to get to 11 tricks.

If East's opening lead is a heart declarer will gain a tempo by winning two heart ticks and she should be able to come to 11 tricks. North would immediately play a spade.

If NS play Negative Double over the 1NT overcall North will double to show hearts else North will remain silent.

Regardless East will not let her partner remain in the notrump contract as her hand has value only if diamonds are trump.

South will show her second suit and the partnership will play in hearts.

West will lead a diamond, Declarer will make her contract on this lead. She will win the diamond and immediately play trump. If West can deduce her partner has a singleton club she will play the ace and give East a club ruff. The defense still has two spades tricks coming to them.

If West's opening lead is the A she can give her partner a ruff, win the spade return to give East a second club ruff. West will win one more spade and one heart to set the contract. Don't expect West to find this defense given that East has shown diamonds.
