North isn't quite strong enough to open 2 and should start with 1. Although 2 can be opened with a strong quick taking hand but fewer than 22 HCP, most experts will not do this with a minor suit oriented hand unless the hand is worth about 10 tricks, as it will take up so much bidding space to show their minor. After South responds 1, North has an interesting rebid problem. Bidding 3NT after opening one of a minor typically shows a long, running minor suit, both side suits stopped, and often shortness in partner's major. The North hand would qualify if the suit were headed by the AKQ rather than the KQJ. What are North's other options? 2 and 3 are the only other possibilities. 3 has the disadvantage that South might be backed into bidding 4 bypassing 3NT. Most experts will rebid 3 with even moderate support and will bid 3 as a catchall bid whenever possible, rather than rushing to bid 4. Even so, 3 takes up a lot of space. 2 is a better alternative, but will likely insure that the defense leads s rather than s against a NT contract. 3NT is a pragmatic choice on this hand but 2 is a close second choice.

Against 3NT, East is likely to lead a . It might seem normal to lead a high in this situation, but there is another factor that many experts know about. If one of the opponents, particularly the dummy, has shown a four card holding, it is often best to lead low even when holding three honors in the suit. So, it is not completely unreasonable to lead low from the East holding. Whatever East leads, declarer will have no problems making nine tricks, thanks to the nice break of the suit. It turns out that the best play is for declarer to take the finesse at trick 2, which will lead to 10 tricks. However, most will tackle the suit right away and when West wins the Ace and the defense cashes out two tricks, the North hand will be forced to pitch away either s or s. As long as West exits in whichever black suit North bares, the defense will hold declarer to nine tricks.

Pass3All pass

South has one of the hardest hands to bid in standard bidding, a 1444 hand with minimal opening values. The difficulties will be apparent if West passes, as North will bid 1 and South will have an awkward rebid. My own personal preference is to sometimes rebid 1NT with a singleton in partner's major, but this is not a universally accepted approach. As it happens, many will double with the West hand. The hand strength is appropriate, even though the 4333 distribution is tepid to say the least. However, at favorable vulnerability, it pays to get in the bidding. If West does double, North should not be in a hurry to bid a poor four card major, and 1NT is a more appealing bid, especially as it quickly limits the strength of the North hand. East is strong enough to bid 2, and North will most likely compete to 3 with nothing wasted in s and a certain fit of at least eight cards.

A contract will play quite well. If the defense starts with two rounds of s, declarer can start ruffing s, using dummy's s as entries, and might well end up with 10 tricks. Most lines of play seem to lead to at least nine tricks, as declarer should not lose more than two trump and two major suit tricks. A very few might make 11 tricks when West leads a at some point, but +130 should be good enough for an above average score for N/S.

Although I wouldn't open the North hand in first or second seat, in third seat, at favorable vulnerability, it looks like a clear 1 opening to me. Over this, East should realize that prospects for slam opposite a passed hand are unlikely and should just bid 4. South can't really bid over this, but some might try 4 anyway. If South does bid 4, West should double, as East should have a good hand for heir 4 bid at this vulnerability. As it happens, the aggressive 4 will work out best as long as North is careful in the play, as 4 is cold, but 4 will only go off a few tricks. With East having no side suit entries to their hand, declarer can't really get run out of trump in a contract, and with all the well fitted minor suit cards in the South hand, 4 will not fare too poorly. Against 4, the defense has to be careful to cash out their minor suit winners without letting declarer pitch on the King, or else declarer will make 11 tricks and a near top

With two four card majors, I admit that I would open the East hand in third seat, despite the vulnerability. The South hand is really too strong to start with 2NT, but if N/S have an agreement that allows North to distinguish good and bad hands for s, it isn't terrible (e.g. 3 to show a good 3 bid.) I still think the South hand is too strong, and would bid 2 planning to rebid s later. North will probably think their stopper is sufficient for NT and will bid 2NT or maybe even 3NT. North won't be thrilled with their stopper, but with a good fitting card, can persevere with 3NT over 3. As it happens, the N/S hands fit great for NT. If East leads a , which seems likely, declarer can let it ride to the Queen, lead a high and end up making 11 tricks. Even a lead will not work for the defense as delarer can duck to West's Queen, win the likely switch with the Ace and lead a to the 10. East can do no better than to cash out the tricks for the defense, holding declarer to nine tricks. I suspect that just getting to 3NT will be a good result on this hand, as it isn't clear how the bidding will proceed if South starts with 2NT.

  1. Three card limit raise (Drury)

N/S should be able to get to 4 on this hand. The North hand is good enough to show as a three card limit raise by a passed hand, which most pairs can do by using the common "Drury" convention, whereby 2 and/or 2 are used by a passed hand over a one of a major opening to show good hands in support of partner's major. The South hand could try to get fancy and investigate game in some intelligent way, but there are a lot of hands where game will be very good and it will be hard for South to inquire, so I would just bid game. With the King onside, 10 tricks should be easy to make, but most of the matchpoints will rest on whether declarer makes an 11th trick. Some careful play may see declarer through. Let's say that West leads a high . Declarer can win, and with limited entries to dummy should start trump by leading low to the 10. West has no particular reason to insert an honor, as declarer might be planning to play the Ace, so assume the 10 wins. Declarer can take the finesse, play a to the Ace and finesse in s again. When the King of s shows up on this trick, declarer can cash the Ace, the King and then exit in a major suit. West can cash two major suit tricks, but the defense has no way to cash a second trick. West will be forced to lead a or a and declarer can win in dummy and cash the other minor suit winner, pitching away both of their s for a +650 and a well deserved good score.
