North opens 1 , East passes, and South responds with a game forcing 2 . North could raise now, but with such a lovely spade suit, it’s more important to show that first. Now South grudgingly bids 2NT with a singleton in partner’s suit, but nothing more accurate to say. North shows his club support and South opts to end the auction in 3NT. While South has some extra values, his lack of controls (aces and kings) makes this hand look more like three notrump than six clubs from his perspective.

West leads a diamond (the 9 or the 7 are both possible), though I'd prefer to have at least a 10 in a "sequence" to consider it a sequence. Declarer wins the A and should play the 9 to set up a late club entry to the spades. If that is allowed to hold, then a low club to the Q will lose to the K in West. I hope Wests didn’t fall asleep on the opening lead. Partner should signal attitude when dummy wins the A. If partner discouraged, then West should find a heart switch and the defense can cash out for a club, a heart and a diamond. If either defender is careless, declarer might take 11 tricks. This trick difference will be huge as the North-South pair will take 11 tricks in 4 losing only a club and a heart.

I know 2 will be a controversial choice for some partnerships. I don’t think it would be controversial in a top field. First seat at favorable vulnerability is a preemptor’s favorite spot. East has a good diamond suit with the 987 supporting two honors, and the hearts are poor enough that I wouldn’t worry about it. After a 2 opening, South and West pass and North will balance with 2 . “But Larry!” I hear. “You said you need an opening hand to overcall on the 2-level. In direct seat you need a real hand, but balancing seat allows you to borrow a bit from partner. Here, the opponents weren’t interested in game so your partner rates to have some values. East passes and South knows that North might have less than stellar values, but could also have up to about 17 points so South bids 2NT to invite game. North might think about 3 , but likely wants this auction to be over as soon as possible and passes.

Against 2NT, West shouldn’t have too difficult a time on opening lead. Yes, partner preempted in diamonds, but come on. West will be disappointed not to take five club tricks, but the defense should still wind up with four clubs, a diamond and a spade trick to defeat this contract a trick. Overly aggressive declarers might even go down two if they try to cash hearts before working on spades or diamonds.

I said that first seat at favorable vulnerability is a preemptor’s favorite position, but I think I wouldn’t go as far as opening 2 with the South hand. My old partner Marty Bergen would do it without a hesitation, but I like to have something notable about my suits. It's important that you stay consistent within your style, but your style should also adjust to seat and vulnerability. After two passes, North could upgrade this 17-count with a good five-card suit and open 1 , but I like opening 1NT, particularly with holdings that I don’t want to put in dummy (like Kx of hearts) or even AKJ of diamonds. South could choose to transfer and bid 3NT, but I think Texas works fine to force us into 4 .

Against 4 , East has no good leads (see how important it was to play hearts from the North hand?). A diamond seems safest so I would lead that even with the information that my partner didn’t make a lead-directing double of diamonds. Declarer now has a little bit of a problem. He has potentially three heart losers, and two club losers. If the heart ace and club K are onside, then there are no problems, but those odds aren’t too good. One club can be thrown on a diamond meaning that if hearts work, then declarer is safe. I think I would take the simple approach of rising with the Q and playing a heart towards the K. If this wins, then declarer can try two rounds of spades and a spade ruff, hoping to pitch one club on a good diamond and one on a long spade. If West wins the ace and plays on diamonds, then declarer can take her club pitch on the long diamond before trying spades, hoping to use the K as an entry later.

PassPass1 Pass
2 Pass2NTAll pass

After two passes, East opens 1 planning on rebidding 2NT. I’ve shown a non-inverted raise to 2 . If you play Inverted Minors then this is a real issue. I could see 1NT or 3 as options, though both of those are flawed. Even with the ability to bid 2 , the East-West pair will get too high as shown here since East will bid 2NT. Some players don’t trust that their partner will know that this shows 18-19 and bid 3NT! I don’t support that, but it’ll be hard to stop low for most pairs. I know there will be passers with the West hand, but I personally can’t stomach passing with an ace and all my points in partner's suit.

The play in 2NT is complicated. I think most auctions on this deal will scream “lead a major!” I would rather lead my weak heart suit than my stronger spades since hearts are less likely to give away tricks. A heart lead is also less likely to be a home run, but I think it’s better to hit a lot of singles over the long haul rather than hit a few home runs and strike out a lot. That’s not the modern sabermetric answer in baseball, but for bridge it’s the best strategy. After a heart lead, declarer has some options and may find a way to make with some diamond tricks, a few hearts, a spade or two, but it’ll require a bit of help.

North opens 2NT. South has 11 points and a five-card suit so should invite slam with 4NT. We don’t worry about the minor, and please don't bring up (or use) Gerber . North has an absolute maximum and can bid 6NT.

East leads the 10 and declarer has 3 spade tricks, 3 heart tricks, and three club tricks to begin with. Declarer needs three more tricks. Playing on diamonds is clear to start, because if you try to set up one of those other suits, and the suit splits poorly, you will go down if the hand with the side winner also has the A. Win the spade in dummy and play a diamond towards the KQ. When the K wins, you need to decide whether you are playing against good opponents or normal opponents. Against normal opponents, I’d assume that West has the A (so-so Easts will capture the king with the ace if they have it). Experienced Easts will duck smoothly with that card. Even if the second round of diamonds is guessed correctly, declarer needs to figure out whether to play a third round of diamonds or for clubs to split. It’s not hard to imagine declarer failing in this contract. A heart lead would have been helpful.
