| Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | 1♣ | 1♥ | Dbl1 | 2♦ | 2♠ | All pass | | This week starts off with a difficult deal all the way around. Auction: North deals and with 14 high card points and 8 losers opens the bidding 1♣. East has some choices holding ♥K97653 and 9 hcp East would typically make a weak jump overcall with 2♥, but East also holds an nice club suit of ♣AQ1076 so East can wait or in the auction here overcalls 1♥. South makes a Negative Double for spades and West with decent 9 hcp bids 2♦ his best minor and the one he would want on lead. North bids 2♠ and all pass. It is interesting to note North's opening bid of 1♣ kept in turn West from bidding 2♣ and East from making a dangerous bid of 3♣. Trick | Lead | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 1. E | ♦4 | K | 10 | 7 | 2. S | ♣4 | 9 | K | A | 3. E | ♥9 | 4 | 2 | Q | 4. N | ♣2 | 7 | ♠2 | 3 | 5. S | ♠10 | J | A | 8 | 6. N | ♣5 | 6 | ♠4 | 8 | 7. S | ♠6 | Q | 5 | ♥3 | 8. W | ♦8 | 3 | ♥7 | J | 9. S | ♦6 | Q | A | ♥6 | 10. N | ♥8 | 5 | 10 | ♠7 | 11. W | ♦9 | ♠9 | ♣10 | 5 | 12. N | ♥J | K | A | ♣J | 13. S | ♦2 | ♠K | ♠3 | ♣Q | Play: The play of the 2♠ contract is tricky. On opening lead declarer (North) realizes missing many spade honors ♠KQJ it doesn't bode well to try to pull trump. Declarer decides to utilize dummy's weak trumps ruffing clubs, so wins the opening lead of the ♦4 with the ♦K in dummy and immediately leads clubs up to the ♣K finessing against the ♣A. East wins the ♣A and returns the ♥9 which declarer wins in hand and leads his first club to be ruffed in dummy. Declarer now leads the ♠10 from dummy which West covers and North wins in hand with the ♠A and lead his second club to be ruffed in dummy. Declarer now leads a spade off dummy which West wins with the ♠Q and shifts to diamonds. Declarer can now win the ♦J ♦A and still has ♠9x sitting behind West ♠Kx, making 3. Auction: South deals and with 13 hcp and 7 losers opens the bidding 1♣. North responds 1♠ and after South rebids 1NT North bids 2♦ as either New Minor Forcing or XYZ game forcing asking opener to further define his hand. East double of 2♦, an artificial bid, is lead directional. South should rebid 3♣ but in the auction here, rebids notrump, 2NT is a mistake. North with 16 hcp and 6 losers overvalues his hand and bids 4NT as Quantitative notrump bids and South bids 5♣ and North bids 6♣. While South's bid of 2NT was a bad bid, it should warn North off of 6♣ and North should pass 5♣. Trick | Lead | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 1. W | ♦2 | 3 | J | 8 | 2. E | ♦Q | 6 | 7 | 5 | 3. E | ♥10 | 6 | 9 | Q | 4. N | ♣7 | 4 | Q | 9 | 5. S | ♦9 | 10 | ♣10 | A | 6. N | ♣A | 8 | 3 | ♠2 | 7. N | ♣K | 5 | J | ♥3 | 8. N | ♠3 | 9 | K | 8 | 9. S | ♠5 | 6 | A | 7 | 10. N | ♥7 | 2 | A | J | 11. S | ♣6 | ♥8 | ♠10 | ♠4 | 12. S | ♣2 | ♥4 | ♠J | ♦K | 13. S | ♥K | 5 | ♠Q | ♦4 | Play: If East doesn't double 2♦ it will be hard for West to find a diamond opening lead, prob ably lead a heart. But the opening lead of a diamond gives East/West 2 diamond tricks, down 1. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes and the trick-by-trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

| In contrast to Board 3, here is a deal where North/South could get to 6m. Auction: North deals and with 16 high card points and 5 losers opens the bidding 1♠. South responds 1NT Forcing F1 and West passes, waiting. North bids 2♣ and South bids 3♣. North bids 3♥ as a control in hearts, denying a control in diamonds and showing extra values. South bids 3♠ as a control in spades. North bids 5♣ denying a control in diamonds and South holding ♦AK bids 6♣. Trick | Lead | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 1. E | ♦4 | 2 | 7 | Q | 2. N | ♠A | 2 | 10 | 4 | 3. S | ♦9 | ♥A | ♠9 | ♥2 | Play: This is not a hard contract to play, declarer North has no alternative but to finesse for the ♣K. In the play here a diamond is lead on opening lead North wins in hand to protect against a bad diamond split, Cashes the ♠A and ruffs a spade in dummy to take the club finesse for the ♣K. The play is easy after this North cashes the ♣A dropping the ♣K and ♣J and runs diamonds. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes and the trick-by-trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

| Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | | Pass | Pass | 1NT1 | 2♥ | Pass | 4♥ | All pass | | | | It is often hard to reach a game after the opponents have opened 1NT. Auction: East deals and passes. Many with South's hand will open 2♠, but with 4 hearts many will first pass and wait with spades South can always get into the auction. West with 15 hcp and a balanced hand opens the bidding 1NT. Now to South's surprise North overcall 2♥ as natural. Many partnerships will have a systems bid to show hearts or show a major and minor, but it should not make a difference. South now has 12 support points for hearts and bids 4♥. Trick | Lead | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 1. E | ♥9 | 4 | 7 | K | 2. N | ♥3 | 2 | 10 | A | 3. W | ♣J | A | 2 | 4 | 4. N | ♠6 | 4 | A | 7 | 5. S | ♠K | 8 | ♣3 | 9 | 6. S | ♠10 | Q | ♥8 | J | 7. N | ♥6 | ♦2 | J | ♦8 | 8. S | ♠5 | ♣8 | ♣6 | ♦4 | 9. S | ♠3 | ♦3 | ♣7 | ♦10 | 10. S | ♠2 | ♣9 | ♦5 | ♦9 | 11. S | ♣10 | K | ♥Q | Q | 12. N | ♦J | A | 6 | Q | 13. E | ♣5 | ♥5 | ♦K | ♦7 | Play: With the lead of a club, East/West should always win a club, a diamond and a heart. But in the auction here East realizes North/South have gotten to game on shape not strength and leads a heart to shorten ruffing values and protect partner's values. This contract is easy to play, declarer (North) wins the first heart and while still has control of clubs leads a second heart knocking out the ♥A. Now it is easy to set up spades for club pitches on spades. Bridge Winners can see the bidding footnotes and the trick-by-trick play on: http://thecommongame.com

| Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis West | North | East | South | | | | 1♦ | 2♠1 | Dbl2 | Pass | 3♣ | Pass | 5♣ | Pass | 6♣ | All pass | | | | Here is another one of those deal where most pairs will play in notrump. Auction: South deals and with 16 high card points opens the bidding 1♦ many will open 1NT. West makes a weak jump overcall of 2♠. North has options, North could bid 3♣ but with 12 hcp and 4 hearts chooses to first make a Negative Double. Many will have South bid some level of notrump, but in the auction here South bids 3♣ knowing that North can make a Western cuebid of 3♠ if that is the right option, and if in fact North does bid 3♠ then South will bid 3NT. In the auction here North bids 5♣ and South bids 6♣. Trick | Lead | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 1. W | ♥6 | 9 | Q | A | 2. S | ♦2 | 3 | K | 4 | 3. N | ♣A | 2 | 3 | 7 | 4. N | ♣5 | 9 | Q | 10 | 5. S | ♦A | 10 | ♠3 | 5 | 6. S | ♦Q | ♠5 | ♠6 | 8 | 7. S | ♦J | ♠4 | ♠9 | 7 | 8. S | ♦9 | ♠2 | ♥4 | 6 | 9. S | ♣4 | ♠10 | 6 | ♥2 | 10. N | ♣K | ♠7 | 8 | ♥7 | 11. N | ♥5 | 3 | 10 | 8 | 12. S | ♠8 | Q | ♣J | J | 13. N | ♥J | K | ♠K | ♠A | Play: The play for 6♣ is not hard. If West doesn't lead the ♠A, then declarer (South) sets up diamonds for spade pitches, if West does lead the ♠A, declarer set up diamonds for heart pitches.
