All pass

If you are South you will bid the notrump game after partner opens. Although you have great diamond support at matchpoints you always want to play in notrump rather than five of a minor as the notrump game usually scores better.

Unfortunately for NS, on this layout the defense will score five tricks before declarer gets her nine.

West will lead a low spade. We usually lead low from an honor so East can place an honor in the West hand. (On this auction, South does not promise a spade stopper.) So East will take her A and continue with the king. She will play a third round of spades. If she expects her partner to have four spades she can continue with a low spade. If she plays the J West must unblock the 10.

Declarer will win the third round of spades and must find the K to make her contract. Her only play is to get to dummy with a club and try the diamond finesse. This loses to West who will play her last spade to East`s good spades.

The auction diagram looks strange because it`s two actions rolled into one.

East will have a difficult time if she opens 1. Her partner will bid 1 and East has no reply. A bid of 2NT promises 18 - 19 HCPs and most pairs have no agreement on the meaning of 3NT on this sequence. Manufacturing a spade or heart bid might find her in serious trouble as partner may have four of that major.

East can solve her rebid problem by opening 1NT. We don`t like bid however it is the lesser of evils. The East hand contains two doubletons, one of which is useless,

West will make a quantitative raise, either directly or after inquiring for a four card major. East with her maximum will bid the notrump slam.

With all the points between the two heands, declarer needs a lot of luck to bring this contract home. She needs the K to be onside unless she can win five clubs tricks which is most unlikely. She needs to win four club tricks which means she needs to find the clubs 3 - 3. (East is missing the intermediate club spots and cannot handle a 4 - 2 club split.)

So declarer will win the opening lead. Her play in clubs is immaterial. She may as well table the A and follow with a low club. She is fortunate in that the clubs behave for her. She can get to dummy with a spade or a diamond to try the heart finesse which works.

Declarer will ahve 12 tricks in notrump.

The only question on this board is whether North should upgrade her hand because of the fourth heart. She has nine HCPs and four hearts. She also has three queens and jacks and these bring the value of her hand down. We think that after some consideration that North should conclude she holds a bad nine rather than a bad 10 HCPs. She should offer a simple raise n hearts.

There is no reason for South to move forward.

The defense will score one spade and one club. Declarer will get to dummy to try the heart finesse which works. She will win 11 tricks on the deal.

West will probably lead a spade rather than a club. The auction indicates that South holds clubs. (North opened 1 and South did not bid a major nor did she support diamonds. So West knows that South does not have four hearts, nor four spades nor four diamonds. West can conclude that South has at least four clubs.)

Declarer will win in her hand. She wants to take finesses in diamonds and in hearts. However with a shortage of entries she should try the diamond finesse first. Should that finesse lose she will still have an entry to her hand to try the heart finesse.

South actually would like to take the two heart finesses. She however is fortunate on this board as if she cannot return to her hand to repeat the heart finesse she will cash the A and the Q will fall from the West hand.

If West leads a high club the defense will score three clubs and the Q as declarer will come to nine tricks in the form of two clubs, three spades, three diamonds and a heart. (Declarer will try the diamond finesse as that will create three tricks even if the finesse loses.)

If East should lead a club, South should play low from her hand. West will win two clubs but cannot continue the suit.

South opens and jumps to show her values. North will use some form of Checkback Stayman to ask whether South holds three hearts or four spades. South bids 3 to deny either holding. North will bid the notrump game.

West does not have an easy lead since she knows that South holds the big guns. We think West should make a passive lead. Through a process of elimination this will be a heart. West shouldn`t lead from her spade holding. South has bid diamonds. West wants to protect her K.

The defense will come to three tricks, one spade, one heart and one club. Declarer will work on various suits but she will win four diamonds. She will come to four hearts as well. She can win at least two clubs and one spade.

East shows her values, denying a four card major. West has an easy raise to the notrump game.

North will likely lead a diamond which declarer will win in dummy. She will cash five clubs. She can afford to exit dummy with a heart which North will win. North will continue diamonds. Declarer will win and cash out, taking her nine tricks.

North does not have an easy second bid. She would like to show her diamond length however 3 is not forcing. North fears that partner may pass 3. So North selects 2NT. She would like to have a second club however she must bid something and she wants to keep the auction alive. South will elect to show mild diamond support.

North expects to lose a club and if partner really has spades she has a chance for 12 tricks in diamonds.

Declarer plans to ruff two hearts in dummy. North will win the opening lead, unblock the K, cash the A and ruff a heart. She will cash the A, discarding a spade, ruff a club to her hand and ruff her last heart in dummy. She can draw trump and concede a spade at the end.

North's alternative to bidding the slam is to play 3NT as playing in 5 is seldom a good score at matchpoints. On this deal we think North should take the chance and bid the slam.

Some will evaluate the North hand as a "good 12" in which case they will bid 3NT directly. (North has 12 HCPs and bunches of nines and tens.) If North only bids 2NT South will bid the nortrump game.

East will lead a heart. Declarer may duck one round. She will win the heart and try the spade finesse which loses. West may switch to a club as she sees the K in dummy. Declarer will win the club and cash her spades and diamonds coming to 10 tricks.

South is in no man's land. Her hand is too strong to open 1NT so she starts with 1. Unfortunately the auction will languish and she will play there. There is no reason for East to balance and reopen the auction.

Declarer will win the opening lead. She should consider establishing the diamonds and may need two diamond ruffs. She should cash a high diamond and ruff a diamond in dummy. She can come to her hand with a club to ruff a third round of diamonds. Now she exits dummy with a spade, taking the finesse if East does not cover. She will ruff a club to her hand and cash her high spade. She can now run her diamonds. The defense will win one spade and two hearts. Declarer will make lots of overtricks.

South would like to open 3 however she has an outside ace and we don't make this bid with an outside ace. North would like to correct to 2 however for most pairs this bid is forcing and South would bid again. So North passes quietly.

West will lead a high diamond. Declarer will win in hand, play a spade to dummy and cash a second round of spades, discarding a diamond. Declarer will continue spades. East will ruff high.

Declarer can discard a club, making her contract.

To defeat 2 West must lead a club. The defense will cash three clubs and East can play a fourth club promoting West's 9 to a winner. Don't expect this defense at many tables.

The defense will score the obvious heart and two diamond tricks.

Declarer has several lines to 10 tricks. The easiest is to dislodge the A getting to dummy with spades.

If West is clever and wins the second round of hearts to give partner a ruff declarer will overruff. Now dummy will have an extra trump with which declarer can ruff an additional club.

Regardless how the defense proceeds, declarer will come to 10 tricks.
