The afternoon starts with a problem for South. East will jam the auction with a huge heart preempt. South, with a good hand containing two suits and plenty of HCPs wants to take action.

Most pairs play that a double in this position is for takeout however with two suits the double is not the correct choice.

South might try a bid of 4♠. This will work on this layout however South will not be comfortable. She may try 4NT which shows a two-suiter. In this case North will likely bid 3♣ and the partnership will play there.

If South is declarer in 4♠ she will make two overtricks. West will lead her partner's suit - hearts. South will win, draw trump and discard a losing diamond on dummy's good A.

If North is declaring East may lead her singleton club or a heart. In both those cases North will also make two overtricks on the same line of play as above.

West will lead her best suit against the notrump game. The heart lead unfortunately for the defense is not the best lead on this layout.

Declarer will win the first round of heart and dislodge the ♣A. She will win one spade, two hearts, five diamonds and two clubs for 11 tricks.

If West leads a spade her side will win three spades and one club.

North opens, South makes a forcing bid. North bids clubs to show a minimum hand with exactly five spades. South settles for the spade partial.

East will likely lead a diamond. West does well to encourage but not take her ace.

The defense can orchestrate a diamond ruff by East or establish two club tricks however they cannot do both. West must lead clubs on this layout to establish two tricks. She will get in only once.

Declarer will struggle on this board however she should make her contract. She will win four spades (including a heart ruff,) one heart, one diamond and probably two clubs as East may lead that suit for her.

This is a difficult board for West to bid. She will open hearts and must make a forcing bid at her next turn. One option is to bid 4 directly. Her suit certainly warrants it. Her other option is to make a false jump shift. If she takes that approach East will support clubs and West will bid the heart game. East will think a long time before passing.

There is little to the play of the board. Declarer will try the heart finesse which loses. She must lose the ♠A. Everyone in hearts will make 11 tricks.

North may lead a diamond to protect her hand. If North leads a heart or a spade she will be helping declarer who will get an extra trick in those suits. West will make 11 tricks if this happens.

Declarer can endplay North is she plays four rounds of diamonds and two rounds of clubs ending in dummy. She can then lad the ♠10. North will win and must return a heart or a spade giving declarer an extra trick.

Some South will be aggressive and open their hand 1. In that case North may be declarer in the notrump game. The partnership has the values for game but no suit. We expect most pairs to settle into the notrump game.

Let's assume South is declarer. West may actually lead a heart. Holding strong heart honors South may take the ace and continue the suit as she has few entries to her hand. This play will give her four heart tricks. She has two obvious clubs. She will lead spades toward dummy and diamonds toward her hand although she not win a diamond trick.

North has only nine HCPs however she does have a five card sidesuit so rather than invite she will bid the notrump game.

West should lead a heart. East will win and continue the suit. The defense will take the four heart tricks and eventually get a club.

West must lead a heart to keep declarer from winning 11 tricks. On any other lead declarer will win, draw trump in three rounds and play on clubs. She will lead the ♣10 from her hand. West will play low. Declarer will play another club and finesse again. She can comet to her hand with a diamond to repeat the club finesse a third time.

On this layout the probability of three club winners is 75%. Declarer will be able to discard her losing heart on dummy's fourth club.

West must decide whether to open 1 distorting her shape or open 1♣ and later rebidding suit as she is not strong enough to open 1♣ and rebid 2.

Regardless, East will bid the notrump game once her partner does not support her hearts. The auctions tells East that West does not have four spades so she will never show her spades.

What is South to lead? Both her suits have been bid by her opponents. WE suspect most Souths will lead a spade in an effort to "hit" partner.

East will win the lead and cash five clubs, She has two heart and must decide how to play diamonds. She has 10 tricks and the question is whether she should try for 11. At matchpoints we think she should cash a high diamond noting the fall of the 10 from the North hand and then take the diamond finesse.

The game is matchpoints and bold play is rewarded.

South will start slowly but catchup during the auction and bid the heart game.

At the table most Souths will go down. They must play the board very carefully to make 10 tricks. To avoid any heart losers on this layout South must lead the J from her hand. Then finesse West for the remaining hearts. This is not a normal play of the suit.

We expect most Souths to lose one trick in each suit.

Declarer will come to nine tricks easily as both black suits split 3 - 3. She will win eight tricks in the black suits. She will play a diamond for her ninth.

North has a difficult time selecting a lead. West has bid her suit so she will likely start the ♣J. The defense will eventually win four tricks.

East will lead a heart. West will take two hearts and clear the suit. Declarer will win the third heart and lead the ♣J. If East covers she will take the ace and continue the suit hoping that West holds the other club honor.

At the table most declarer will go down. North has two spades, one heart, two diamonds and three clubs. She needs one more trick. Most will try the spade finesse which fails.

One way to win a ninth trick is to play the J. East will cover. Declarer returns to her hand and plays the 9. If East covers dummy's 7 will be her ninth trick. This is not a reasonable line.
