  1. Takeout

In first seat or third seat it's important to preempt with a weak hand as the opponents rate to own the hand. North's flaw (side 4-card major) is not enough to veto as the vulnerability and suit quality are favorable for a Weak Two. None vulnerable, West is also under pressure to get to a good place - maybe East's stopper is not so solid and there is a minor partial, or maybe partner will pass the double with a stack. Maybe East has 5 spades. Maybe East just has a maximum and 3NT will come home.

Here East is kind of in-between anything good, so 3NT is the default. The long minor suit might be good in 3NT, with 2 heart stoppers to hold off the defense.

South can lead a top heart (raising showed 3, no need to indicate length again with a low lead) and North should discourage with the Six. Declarer of course should not run the diamonds and play clubs, drawing a roadmap for the defense, who will switch to spades out of necessity (else declarer has 5 diamonds, 2 hearts, and 4 clubs for 11 tricks). East instead can win the first heart and play on clubs. South should take the second club to allow North to make an informative discard, which should be a discouraging diamond, making it clear to South that declarer will have at least 3 diamonds, 4 clubs, and 2 hearts, so should go for North having the Q to make it worth a preempt with so few HCP in the other three suits.

  1. Jordan/Truscott - limit raise or better

East should not preempt here, despite the seat and vulnerability - with both majors it should be easy to come back in later (to contrast, with a major-minor it may get difficult to specify the suits and keep the level low). Opening 2 and rebidding hearts might work if your partner is expecting that strategy but at least have a better hand.

Jumping to 4 over 2NT shows a weak hand with 5 or likely 6 spades, so West has no problem pushing to 5-over-5 with the void, good controls, and 4th trump.

On a normal heart lead, declarer can ruff, and eventually get 3 heart ruffs and ruff a fourth with the final trump, losing only the trump Ace and a long heart. However, it is important to return to hand with diamonds so North can't pitch a heart on a third club, which allows her to overruff the third heart ruff and return a trump to kill the final ruff. Why diamonds? With just five diamonds, it's less likely an opponent will show out quickly than the six-card club holding.

The doubled game making should be the most common result.

  1. Worst possible hand (fast arrival)

South has about the only AAK hand I would pass on, it's a moonscape otherwise.

With a weaker heart suit I as West would not mind opening 1, pretending to have 5-5 shape, but these hearts are so potent, I'll try reversing this hand (planning on rebidding spades twice to show 5 spades and 6 hearts). With weaker spades I'd go with pretending to be 4-6 shape (opening 1) but not reversing. With both majors, I feel confident things will work out with the reverse.

North should get the good suit in there despite the shape, and at IMPs South might try 3NT right then and there, but at matchpoints it might be best to go for a making partscore on the off chance partner has a crappy hand like this.

North's immediate run back to diamonds after opener's spade salvo should show the worst possible hand, anything else could just pass or maybe bid 2NT or 3. It's important to bid with the bad hand because otherwise East might have a convenient 3 cue-bid. Not here, and South should just go quietly. If partner truly has the worst possible hand, 3 stands a good chance at making (as it does here).

Best defense is diamonds, diamonds, and diamonds, challenging declarer to get clubs right. There isn't a good way to guess the clubs - finessing on the second round just seems too risky.

111NTAll pass

North could make a takeout double with a doubleton minor, but the hearts are another bad flaw. I'd rather mention a good suit at the 1-level than pass this solid hand.

The spade call serves to dissuade South from losing a fast trick on a diamond lead. North can tell the 3 is not from length. The Two is still out and South probably would have proffered a raise with a tripleton and 3 or 4 HCP. That means continuing spades after winning the King would lose a trick. That leaves clubs, cashing the Ace (South discouraging) and playing another.

Declarer can unblock the Q (South showing an odd number) and North should duck this and take the next heart to gum up communication. North continues clubs and sets the contract eventually.

A 1NT opening by East is tempting, with honors in both doubletons. That would make buying the contract in 2 very likely. But after a normal 1 opening, it would be good for East-West to have two ways to raise over the takeout double (weak raise, constructive raise). But South is going to ensure this doesn't die at the 2-level in any case. South is sure to find this double (not a takeout double, as she passed 3).

South knows partner is broke on this auction. Best would be a passive spade lead and hope to figure out the safest exit later.

Declarer can reason that South has all the outstanding HCP, the only hand that makes sense for this auction is a 17+ HCP hand too good to bid the first time, but unbalanced, else would have overcalled 1NT. That said, there should be no hurry to take a diamond finesse.

Easiest is to take the second spade (to confirm the break) and play the Q. South takes perforce which opens up a path to pitching a diamond - maybe even a heart if the Nine comes down. South continues spades, and now declarer can play a spade back, endplaying South before having to make a decision with the clubs. If South cashes the diamond, declarer will pitch a heart on the club. If South cashes the heart, there is no second heart loser and a diamond can be pitched on the club.
