"Double Dummy" believes a Spade Slam can be made.

It's possible ONLY because the QJ of Spades are Doubleton!

How often does that happen? It's against the odds!

How important are overtricks? How important is it to play NT when you can make
the same number of tricks as playing a Major?

The Nasr's earned their first place finish!

East and South have no problem PASSING!

What does West open???

Maybe 2 NT (holding 20-21 HCP) BUT having two doubleton's! (QT & QJ!)

At my table, West opened 1 Heart and as North, I PASSED!

I wanted to bid my Major but had just given a lecture about (10-5-2)
10 HCP, 5 of my suit, and 2 of the top 3 Honors. I'm proud of my RESTRAINT!

Can you see why it MIGHT be a BAD lead to lead an "Unprotected Ace [an Ace not "protected by a King] against a Suit Contract????

The Ace Kills the King or Queen of your partner.

Now I admit that will NOT happen with regularity, but every so often is still TOO MUCH!

The convention card lists 13 different lead suggestions against a Suit contract, and NONE of the suggestions suggest leading An ACE that does not have a King standing next to it, in your hand!

Does North open a No Trump with 15 HCP and two Doubletons?

Did East open a WEAK TWO SPADES?

Does your partnership agree on the "strength" of your "weak two" suit?

I've had partners who open a weak 2 only with 2 of top 3 or 3 of top 5 and some who open with very little. A9xxxx is better than some.

You and partner should discuss what "style" you will use!

You can never be sure, but had I held the East hand, I might have opened 2 !
It might depend on who my opponents are!

How many 1 Heart contracts were played today?

On this hand, I (Alan) am North! LHO opened 1 Heart!

Pass - Pass - to ME!

Now I "know" West has less than 6 HCP! Else West would bid something!

Luckly I Passed, as did Elizabeth Nasr! We shared "tops" on this board. It helped the Nasr's get a 70%+ game today.

It's hard to say "PASS". WHY? It's a 4 letter word!!!!!

L E A D S - L E A D S - L E A D S - L E A D S - L E A D S -

Whenever I hold KQxx against a 3 NT declarer, I never know if I should lead
(from my longest and strongest suit) the King or Queen or 4th best!

OK, Everybody looking atg this South hand!
With 7 Spades and 16 HCP, (withAQ and AQ and Ax) you can't not bid em!

If West opens and East says something, what minimum cards could your partner hold
that would be useful to you and partner still have have under 6 HCP?

Michel Nasr knows how to bid that hand!

If North has the Ace of diamonds, Game is possible.
If North has a Major King, Game is possible.
If North has a Club King, Game is possible.

If your partner has only 1 of those cards, is your partner every going to bid???

I'm changing this score, especially since West led the Ace of Clubs.

Did ALL of the Wests Overcall a Spade?

Everybody led a Spade.

10-5-2 (for an overcall is 10 HCP, 5 of your suit, and 2 of the top 3 Honors).

3 of the top 5 is "almost the same, except you DONT TAKE the 1st Two Spades.

Even if Spades are trumps, how many "sure" winneres does West have?

4 likely spades.

The Qx of hearts and the QJ of diamonds are not "sure" tricks.
The T94 of Clubs is not a sure trick either.

There is a reason Janet & I BOTH teach an overcall should be (10-5-2)!

I am aware other teachers disagree!

When you pay your money, you get to Do What You Want! (but at least check on the actual results once in a while!)

Responder should count "length" points OR "shortness", but probably NOT BOTH!

Either way, The west hand becomes 6 "playing points" and needs to go to game opposite a 2 NT opener.

Having 6 spades, I would lean towards a Spade Game but "trying" for a NT game
with an extra trick is not a terrible idea but the West hand has no "extra" tricks other than RUFFING VALUES!

I think this is an interesting hand!

I was so excited to have the change to play Cappelletti on a hand

when East opened 1 NT but Michel "ruined" the experience when he bid 3 NT!

No change then!

The "GRAND SLAM" can be made, only because the King of Diamonds is finessable AND the JACK of Diamonds drops Singleton.

One is 50-50 and the other is way less than that! Go Figure!

Answer TO THE Question of the DAY!

North is Dealer and opens 1 SPADE!

East Passes.

What do you bid?

IF you say 2 of a Minor, you are promising 10 HCP! YOU would NOT overbid, would you?

North rebids 2 Hearts. Then what do you bid?

If you bid 1 No Trump, you are showing 6-9 HCP and NO SPADE SUPPORT! Correct?

Well, is that correct?????
