All pass

Although some pairs may end up in 3NT, I expect most N/S pairs will play in 2NT. If East bids 2 over 1, they may end up regretting it, as South might be forced to just bid 3NT. Should East bid 2? It pays to be aggressive at matchpoints, particularly when not vulnerable, but the East hand has no distribution, only a moderate suit quality, and with North having already opened the bidding, the preemptive value of a 2 bid is reduced. How many tricks will N/S make in NT? As further evidence of the disadvantages of bidding 2 with a poor hand, West will likely lead the King if East has bid 2. However the play proceeds from there, declarer can end up with at least nine tricks if they are careful. If East has been silent in the bidding, then West will have a more difficult opening lead problem. If West leads a , declarer will immediately have seven black suit tricks, with one trick guaranteed. Declarer will be rightly worried about the suit, but as it happens, the suit is safe, as East has no entries to their hand, so declarer should score nine tricks if they finesse the 10. The difference between making eight and nine tricks will be a lot of matchpoints, particularly for any N/S pairs who are playing 3NT.

E/W should play 4 at almost every table. The East hand is close to opening bid. One reason to not open light with the East hand is that the distribution of the suits is particularly awkward for most standard bidding. Possible bidding sequences if you do open the East hand are to open 1 or 1 and rebid 1NT if partner bids 1, or to open 1 and rebid 2 over 1 or 1NT. In any case, East will often have a rebid issue if they open the hand, so being also light in HCP suggests passing. On the actual hand, even if East opens, it will work out, as West will respond 1 if South passes. Note that some Souths will consider 1 over an East opening, but this would be highly dangerous as South has a poor suit, poor overall values and the vulnerability is bad. The best case scenario for South is that E/W get to game despite South's 1 overcall, but if West passes and East reopens with a double, South will not be happy playing 1 doubled.

In a contract, with the suit sitting well and the suit breaking, declarer has three losers. However, if North leads a , declarer can put in the Queen and then pitch a loser on a after taking the losing finesse. Now, with the finesse working, declarer will end up with 11 tricks and a top. A NT contract has the same 10 tricks available as a contract, thanks to the finesse working, but has almost no chances for an 11th trick.

3All pass

E/W have the potential to get too high on this hand, although in the bidding shown, both East and West have to take fairly aggressive views of the hand, especially given the vulnerability. South has a normal 1 opening and West has a normal takeout double. North has enough values to bid, and can choose between 1NT and 2. I like 2 for several reasons. First, 1NT over a takeout double typically shows better strength than if West had passed, something more like 8-11 HCP rather than 6-9, so the North hand is minimal for it as well as not having good major suit stoppers. Also, North should expect that E/W will be able to compete in a major, so showing some support right away is key. It is questionable whether East should bid 2 at this vulnerability. The hand strength is about right to make a free bid opposite partner's takeout double, but the King looks to be of dubious value, facing shortness in the West hand. With five s and an good hand for playing in a suit contract, South should raise to 3, despite holding minimal HCP. West also has a questionable hand to compete further. In general, 4441 hands do not play particularly well in a 4-4 fit. The suit looks good for West, and a contract will likely play well if East has shortness, but will likely be poorer if East has length. All in all, West should probably pass.

A contract is very straightforward to play as declarer has two trump losers and one loser in each major suit. A contract is much more interesting. As it happens, on a lead, declarer is in a lot of trouble, and the defense can end up arranging two ruffs, two tricks, a ruff and both major suit Aces if they are careful. A lead is more interesting. Declarer has no quick entries to their hand and might lead a to the King which will not work out well. If instead they lead a low from the West hand, South will win the Jack, and might continue s. Now declarer can lead another and things appear to be going better, but the hand will still not play well from this point, unless South errs by leading the Ace. Any E/W who play in a contract and escape for -100 should score well.

  1. Could be as short as two

Some considerate bidding by N/S should lead to the optimal contract of 3NT. After North opens 1, South should make a game forcing bid in a minor. For many players, this will be 2, as this is South's longer minor. However, a lot of experts that I know prefer to guarantee five s with a 2 bid, and will bid 2 with the South hand. If you use this option, you need to be careful to alert 2, as it could be as short as a two card suit, in the event that the hand has exactly 3442 distribution. North will show their six card suit, and now South can make a good choice to bid 2NT rather than supporting s. South has excellent stoppers in all three other suits and no reason to think that a contract will play better than NT contract. North still has the option to bid s a third time with a hand unsuitable for NT, but on the actual hand, with honors in all the other suits, and knowing that South does not have a two card suit, North can happily raise to 3NT.

Against a contract, if East leads a , E/W will be able to get a ruff to go with their two top major suit tricks. On a lead, West can win the Ace and lead a for the same result. If East leads a , declarer is likely to win the King and lead a to the Ace to cash two s and lead a trump, which will again set up a ruff for the defense. Any defenders who don't score a ruff against 4 will not score as well as they could, but should still be above average as 11 tricks can be made in NT against any defense. In fact, I can see some declarers making 12 tricks in a NT contract if West ducks a towards the Queen at some point, but this will be rare.
