  1. Reverse Drury (showing a limit raise)
  2. Splinter

North and East pass, and then South needs to make a plan. She could open 2♣ planning on bidding spades and then hearts, but I'd rather open 1♠ and plan on jump shifting. After a 1♠ opening (and a pass by West with bad clubs and no singleton), North can use Reverse Drury with a hand that evaluates to at least 10 or 11 support points. East passes and South's 2 bid is natural, forcing, and shows interest in game. North can now Splinter in clubs to describe this game-going hand. Knowing that North has a club control allows South to use Blackwood and then bid 6♠. If South had opened 2♣, after 2 and a 2♠ rebid by opener, then North can Splinter directly and the auction continues with Blackwood.

West needs to lead against 6♠. Only a club lead holds it to 12 tricks, but I don't think I would find it. Unlike many of the "double dummy" slams that players worry about missing, this is an excellent slam. If your partner and you didn't get there, it would be worth discussing why not.

This is an interesting problem for partnership agreement. North has slam interest opposite a notrump opener. In some systems, transferring to clubs allows you to see if partner likes clubs. If you play that the notrump bidder can show that they like clubs in response to a transfer, then you might choose to bid slam (would 4NT be quantitative?) when partner does that here. North could also choose a general invite directly with 4NT after the opening 1NT. It's not easy for South to accept in that case. Getting to slam (either 6♣ or 6NT) will be good accomplishment for the North-South pair. Maybe old is best. 1NT -- Pass --3♣ natural and slammish (not many still play this).

We can see that 12 tricks are easily available; two spades, three hearts, two diamonds and five clubs. As a declarer, you can concede the club ace and claim. Unlike Board 1, this is not a slam I'd kick myself over missing, but I would have been very pleased to get there.

   3♠
Pass?

South opens a normal 3♠ at favorable vulnerability. North faces a pure guess. Blasting 6♠ could be right (and I would certainly do it if my partner wasn't in the seat where a preempt could be really terrible). I think I would probably bid 6♠ and hope that it had play.

This type of auction calls for aggression. Against either 4♠ or 6♠, West should lead the A. When declarer has a weak hand, aggressive leads are safe. Unfortunately for North-South, this lead will kill the declarer's chances. On a non-diamond lead, declarer has 12 tricks. A lot of pressure for West.

1♠2♣DblPass
3 Pass4 All pass

West opens 1♠ and North bids 2♣. East can now make a Negative Double showing hearts and enough value to compete on the 2-level. South passes and West has enough distributional strength to jump in hearts. This shows extras, but is not game forcing like a jump shift. Why not repeat the spade suit? If you bid 3♠ and that ends the auction, you might be playing opposite a void. Partner's Negative Double means that you very likely have a heart fit, you don't need both hearts and spades to be trump. East will confidently bid a game.

Leading a trump is frequently right when you are playing in declarer's second bid suit. There's no reason for North to feel differently here (additionally when partner is likely to have very little it is good to lead passively). Declarer has tough choices and could go different ways with it. Setting up spades looks best. Declarer is likely to make this, but could face difficulties.

Michael Berkowitz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
 PassPass1NT
2♠DblPass2NT
All pass

This is a tough auction to analyze. After two passes, South opens 1NT. West's action will depend on system. I've shown a 2♠ bid since that works as natural or in systems where it shows spades and a minor. North would make a Negative Double . East passes and South wouldn't be very happy. I think 2NT is a potentially profitable guess. North's spade holding might make her think about raising to 3NT, but pass is fine also. If South bids 3♣, North should bid 3 to try to find a fit.

West leads the ♠J against 2NT or 3NT. Declarer wins in hand and sees one spade trick, no heart tricks two diamond tricks and one club. Yikes. The good news is that you have one more spade stopper. The bad news is that it's not at all clear what to try next. The bidding may be helpful. Perhaps declarer can figure out that a club to the J rates to gain a trick since West, if she takes the king, will give you two tricks. This allows declarer to postpone a diamond guess until later. That said, I expect a struggle on this. Wests who compete to the 3-level will create a very interesting play problem for everyone.
