We missed this so-so game because we don’t open flat 11 point hands. Note the 3 bid, opposite a passed partner. Non-vulnerable, anything goes.

Should Bob Hamman make a move toward 6? Probably not. Sympathy for poor West who leads his 4th best club. We would too.

There are people who would open 2NT, and the auction would proceed:
3 - 3 - 4NT (quantitative) - all pass.
That auction, or a slam auction, might attract a high club lead, but thirteen tricks are still there, just much more nervously

After two passes, would you open 1 with West? Perhaps if your J was better placed. Not to open in 3rd chair is losing bridge. Did you find the uppercut to get 800? Well done.

The defense must cash their three black winners and the AK before leading a third diamond (at trick 6) for a ruff with the J. Pity declarers who misplay the spade suit by not taking the ace first. However, most declarers should take twelve tricks in spades or clubs.

A case can be made for overcalling 2NT but not opposite a passed partner. Of course looking at all four hands we would be defending 2X.

After the light 1 overcall, Bob Hamman bids his chunky four card heart suit. David Berkowitz raises (certainly a LAW obeying call) and, when Bob tries for game, David firmly rejects.

Declarer must handle the club spots carefully. When was the last time you finessed against a nine!

David Berkowitz bid 2 as usual, hoping for another chance. Unlucky, but is that really a 3 or 3 rebid? Or should Bob Hamman raise to three clubs? It is not like any game is particularly attractive.

I wish I knew what to open the South hand but pass seems best. Lots of people like five card weak twos but with 5-3-3-2, count us out. East -West might get out for -100 in 4, but if the opponents find an enterprising double -200 will be the kiss of death.

We play that Stayman promises a major so we would reach this poor, but lucky game. To bid after a 15-17 notrump is aggressive, but we think warranted. If East does pass, South might find himself declaring 2 of a red suit, doubled. Could be very interesting.

3 is pushy but who can double? After a few slam efforts, we settle in game. We suspect most declarers will come home with eleven winners in spades.

Did you bid too much as East? (We would). Did they nail you? (We did). Did you lead a trump? We consider it mandatory to lead trumps against virtually any low-level contract and would do it here. Yes we see that North - South can make 3NT, but with 24 HCP and no long suits it is hard to reach.

Finally a flat hand. Anyone who knows what to lead, let us know (4th best?). We suspect most would lead a club. Declarer might preserve his king in dummy as an entry for his diamonds and should end with 9 or 10 tricks.

3 is 5-5 slammish. South might consider 4 next.

Whatever contract you reach, the play will be arduous, although 4 looks easy enough if you are a good guesser.

After East bids twice, he must respect partner. Declarer should come home with about nine tricks, maybe ten if East plays the A on partner’s jack lead.

East asks for a stopper. West obliges. Then West wins a lot of finesses. Is it possible to guess clubs? Let’s see, A, heart finesse. Diamond to Q (note the 9) heart finesse K to Ace, 100% safe if south follows, club QKA, and now finish the diamonds. It can be done, but will anybody do it?

If you open 1, you have no rebid so we prefer the off-shape1NT bid.

After a heart lead, declarer will probably make 5, but he needs to guess diamonds.

A tricky problem. It will invariably go 3, pass, 4 to North. Some might open 2 but that is a matter of partnership style. Poor North. He might be going for a big number but we feel he has to bid 4. After that West should save at the prevailing vulnerability and North should pass it around to South who has to double with his soft values. After a spade to North, North-South can achieve par by taking their two diamonds and a ruff.

  1. Limit raise in hearts

A very questionable take-out double by West gets his side in trouble. Probably better to pass, let the opponents Drury their way to 2 and then balance.

David Berkowitz thinks he might have made a mixed raise (3) but settles for the 2 cue. A mixed raise is about 7-9 HCP with 4+trumps

David Berkowitz gives preference with 2, at his third turn. He could not bid 2NT. Remember 2 was artificial 4th suit, and David had no heart stopper. Bob Hamman bids 2NT and with only two spades it gets raised to 3NT. Since 2 did not promise hearts. Declarer may well win the heart lead and duck a spade.

The power of the preempt. After 2 (you don't subscribe to those old theories about a side 4 card major, do you?) and East's 3 overcall, South has an auto-raise to four. East-West are slated for a poor result in 5, unless you have the hand records to help you in the play.

We always lead trump on this auction but K6 is tough. Declarer is still unlikely to make more than six tricks. We couldn’t find a way to clubs, could you?

Bob Hamman doesn't know if 2/3 hearts is best, temporizes with 2. David Berkowitz shows a great club raise with artificial 2 and Bob knows what to do and should come home with ten tricks.

  1. asks for a 5-card Major

Puppet Stayman is a wonderful convention, although on this hand 3NT works out. Since David Berkowitz cannot have his own spades, 3 is an artificial slam try.

What are poor East - West to do? At least they rate to go plus against three hearts. Opening a weak 2 on the East hand is not our idea of bridge.

We consider the South hand a mandatory 2opener. 10 winners. After we show our club suit, partner may invite with 4NT here (many play 4 as an ace ask), and South cannot do less than bid six. Good for you if you got there (and avoided 6NT, unless you avoided the diamond lead).

Responding 1 as South is pushing the "Major first" mania too far. Best is to plan on bidding diamonds twice. David Berkowitz downgrades his hand when clubs are bid on his left, and indeed, he may have to struggle to make nine tricks.
