North starts her afternoon with a little jam of her opponents. She makes a Weak Two Bid in spades. East has an easy pass as does South. West doubles to get her side in the auction. East has a decent hand however it is a minimum. She knows her side has a nine card fit and she has a singleton diamond. Those are reasons to upgrade her hand and consider bidding 4 rather than just 3. East downgrades her hand as she has weak clubs. (She's not too worried about spades as her partner probably has two spades for her double. On a bad day West will have three spades.)

The final contract will be chosen by East. If she bids 3 her side will play there and if she is feeling lucky and tries 4, that will be the final contract.

Unfortunately for the declaring side they can only make nine tricks in hearts (actually they can make 10 against sloppy defense) or rather the defense can score four tricks before declarer scores 10.

North will lead the 3. Here's a good point. When partner shows a six card suit and leads another suit, it's almost always a singleton. South knows to take her ace and return a club for North to ruff. North can now shift to the K and wait for her spade and heart tricks.

If North does lead a club she will get a second chance when she wins the A. She can at this point cash her spade trick and play a club to partner for her club ruff.

West has several decisions to make on this board. The first is whether to bid 2 or double at her first turn. We think her hand is too strong to start with an overcall. If she bids 2 she will have a difficult time convincing her partner that she holds 17 HCPs.

East will jump to 3 showing more than the expected seven HCPs. West might try 3 asking partner for a spade stopper however after brief consideration we think West will raise partner to game. For the jump she is expecting partner to have a fifth heart. (There is no guarantee however more often than not the bid will be accompanied by a fifth heart.)

South will lead the A. North will signal encouragement. South will continue the suit and give partner a ruff holding declarer to 10 tricks and her contract.

When East wins the lead she will lead a heart toward dummy to discover the K. She will draw trump, unblock the K and play a club to dummy. Declarer can now discard a losing club on dummy's good diamond.

East's sequence shows a hand with 22 - 24 HCPs. If the partnership uses Puppet Stayman then West may inquire about a five card major and learn that East holds five spades. Some Wests will still opt for the notrump game as their hand does not have ruffing power. When they consider their hand they have no extra length nor any shortness. Their three spades will be used in following suit when trump is being drawn and will not provide an extra trick. With that consideration West may choose to play in notrump as that game will score higher.

Declarer's line will be the same in both 3NT and 4 however the opening lead may be different. At notrump South may lead a heart while if the final contract is in spades South will lead a club.

Declarer has eight tricks in the black suits. It appears she can establish three tricks in diamonds and one in hearts. She has a limited number of entries to dummy. It appears she has only two entries. The Q is an entry and perhaps the K will be an entry. The 10 will become an entry on the third round of the suit however declarer does not yet know that. Because of the shortage of entries we think the best way to play diamonds is to cash the A followed by the Q. If the defense doesn't take their K declarer should cash her spades. This will put pressure on both her opponents who must find discards. Most importantly declarer, after cashing spades can play a heart for her eleventh trick.

The difficulty with opening the East hand 2 is showing both suits. So East opens 1 and reverses to show a big hand. West shows club support and East bids the slam as she needs very little from partner. (As an aside, the reverse is forcing for one round so East is not concerned about the board being passed out.)

South will likely lead a high spade. Declarer will finesse the Q as she has nothing to lose by doing so. Upon ruffing the opening lead she will draw trump ending in dummy to cash a high spade discarding a heart. She may lead a heart toward her hand however North should rise with the ace to take the defense's only trick.

Some afternoons the planets align and everything works for you. That's the case on this board for North. She will be declaring the heart game and should make an overtrick.

Looking at the suits individually and out of context we see that declarer will lose one spade. When she play hearts most will cash a high honor in hand and play a heart to dummy's ace discovering the heart position. It's easy enough to now take the heart finesse. The diamond will be played by cashing the ace and leading toward the Q in hand and clubs will be played by taking a finesse.

Declarer must be careful in timing the play of the different suits carefully. She will win the opening lead and start to draw trump. Upon learning of the heart situation she will turn her attention to spades as she will need to ruff a spade prior to drawing all the trump. She will eventually come to play the diamonds. When the dust settles she should have lost one spade and one diamond.

East will open and South will find a bid. She may make a call in diamonds and she may double in an effort to get hearts into the picture. Regardless of South's action West will show spade support. There is much to say for supporting with support. East will bid the game.

Declarer will ruff the opening heart lead and immediately cash the A to ruff a diamond noting the fall of the Q from thw North hand. She can come to her hand with a club and ruff a third round of diamonds with the J in dummy. She can now draw trump. In the end she will lose either a diamond or a club.

North will quite reasonably lead a spade. Unfortunately this lead is not beneficial to her side. Declarer will play low from dummy and win the trick in her hand. She will unblock the K and lead a heart to dummy. She can then run her club tricks.

In order to keep her four hearts South must discard two spades and three diamonds. She will have a difficult time discarding a high diamond. When declarer next cashes the A South must discard her A.

This is a difficult play for most club players. We expect most will discard a heart to keep a high diamond. West will now come to hand in hearts, overtaking the J with her queen to win two more heart tricks as her fourth heart will grow to be a winner.

Declarer will have 13 tricks.

South will lead a spade which declarer will win in dummy. She wants to lead club toward the board so she will come to her hand, taking the heart finesse. If East could see the card she would have finessed the 10 however at the table we expect her to try the Q.She will then lead the J and let it ride when South plays low. North will return a spade. Declarer will in turn take another heart finesse to lead a club.

When South shows out declarer will change tact and go to Plan B.

She has three spades and three hearts. She also has one club trick and needs two diamonds. So she will win the A and advance the K. This will ensure nine tricks and her contract.

East could have made more tricks is she knew where the cards were . At the table we expect most declarer to only win nine tricks.

The auction starts slowly. East will bid out her hand pattern showing six clubs and four spades. West has great club support and launches an ace asking sequence.

East will show three keycards which West can identify as three aces. (She holds the K and A so the only three keycards remaining are the aces.) West asks for kings and finds that East holds the missing king.

When West counts tricks she knows her side has four spades, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs. She confidently bids the grans slam.

East gets to a very reasonable notrump game.

Unfortunately she only has one line which will allow her to make her contract.

South would have lead a diamond but on this auction she doesn't want to lead into declarer's suit so we think many Souths will lead a spade, the unbid major.(Note that East did not bid spades so it unlikely she has four. West did not use New Minor Forcing so she does not have four spades. So North must have at least four spades.)

East has two spades and three clubs. She needs four more tricks. She can try develop one or two heart tricks however she will lose the race as NS will develop their spades before East can win two hearts. (Even if East wins two hearts she needs the diamond finesse to work.)

East can see that her only chance for four more tricks is in diamonds. Specifically, South must hold both the King and Jack of diamonds for the contract to succeed.

If East places the 10 on the table, intending to finesse, and repeating as necessary.

East will use whichever methods her partnership uses to show a Limit Raise. West will carry on to game. The East hand has several features which are worth considering in terms of upgrading the hand and considering a slam. East has a singleton and an outside five card suit. These are both pluses. However once the partnership learns that the singleton is in a suit West holds features the hand must be devalued and slam must be forsaken on this board.

With all the firepower available to them some EW pairs will fail in their contract. North will make a safe opening lead, perhaps a heart. Declarer will win in hand. If she cashes the K first she must lose two spade tricks. If she leads a spade to the ace she will learn the spade position and hold her spade losers to one.

The play of the diamonds will likely result in the loss of a trick. Declarer will lead the Q from dummy. If South covers then declarer must finesse the 10 in the North hand. If South does not cover the queen then declarer must lead a low diamond on the second round to avoid a diamond loser. Some declarers will lose a diamond.

Declarer will at some point lead a club from dummy toward her hand. East must gauge whether to take her ace or duck. Taken out of context, it's usually right for South to duck, keeping the AJ behind the king in dummy. If South is getting two spades, or if she has a good count on the hand she will know to rise and take her ace. (If EW had a different auction and West showed a singleton club South should rise with the ace. The usually way to play a suit with a singleton is to lead toward the king. Since declarer is leading away from the king she must hold the queen.)

Expect a range of results on this board. West may lose one or two spades, she may lose a diamond and she may avoid the loss of a club. West will win nine to 11 tricks depending upon the action at each table.

We've no idea what North will do at her second turn to bid. East has effectively removed bidding space and NW are under pressure to find their optimum spot.

We see many NS pairs ending in 5. A few will bid the slam.

The defense will start a heart. Fortunately for declarer she will do well and get 12 tricks. She will win the heart in hand and lead a club toward dummy. She can return to her hand with a diamond and draw the remaining trump, losing one trick in the suit. West does not have a second heart nor does East have an entry so declarer will have time to discard her losing heart on dummy's K.

Once South rebids her diamonds North is likely to settle for the notrump game. She has weak hearts and slam doesn't appear likely. Playing in 3NT is usually better than playing in 5.

North will simply jump to the notrump game, ending the auction.

Some Wests may interject a club bid however we think most will pass at this vulnerability.

East will lead a club. Spades is her longer suit however North bid spades. Furthermore if East leads a spade and somehow manages to establish the suit she has no entries.

North will have an easy time. She will win her club trick, unblock the K and cash six diamond tricks taking the time to cash her spade winners. When the J drops her fourth spade is a winner and she will cash that as well discarding two hearts and one club from dummy. She can return to dummy take the good hearts and remaining diamonds.
