Our afternoon starts with a difficult hand for West to bid.

North will open her shapely hand. Most will try 1 but a few Norths may start with 1.

South has no option but to bid 1NT and West will double to get her values onto the table. North will pass over the double and East is forced to bid clubs. West will show her spades and by inference a great hand. East should raise to game.

The defense will cash two diamonds. They partnership[ must signal correctly so that North does not continue the suit as this will allow declarer to score an overtrick.

The defense will eventually win a club trick.

There are several choices to make on this board which will affect both the final contract and the outcome.

West gets the first choice. If her partnership is playing Inverted Minors she will likely bid 1NT. If the partnership doesn't play the convention then West will start with a 2 response. East may end as declarer in 3NT.

This will not be a good result for the offense as South will lead a heart. The defense will eventually win four hearts and one club as declarer can scramble for eight tricks.

Getting back to the auction, North must decide whether to enter the fray however we expect most Norths to pass quietly in tempo.

North gets an immediate second decision as she must decide upon the opening lead. If she leads a heart the defense will prevail. If she starts a club declarer will make her contract with two overtricks. West will continue playing clubs to establish three club tricks before the defense can take their hearts.

We think North should start a heart rather than a club. Her club suit is headed by the ace so that will always be a trick for her side. If she starts a club the defense may be able to establish clubs but they have no guarantee of scoring any hearts.

Our declarer will have to work to bring her contract home. North will lead a heart.

Many will try the 9 from dummy, winning the trick. The magic play is to place the ♠J into play. Interestingly this will give West four spade tricks. We don't expect this to happen at any table as it's not a standard play.

The more likely play is that declarer will lead a small spade to her ace noting the fall of the ♠10 from the North hand. Declarer can now continue spade and win three spade tricks. South will continue hearts upon winning her spade.

West will now be able to endplay her North opponent for her game-going trick. She can win the second heart in dummy to cash her good spades.. North must find three discards. If North discards two clubs and a heart declarer can duck a club to the North hand, later scoring her king.North can only win two hearts, one club and one spade.

If North discards a diamond, we see that declarer will have four diamond tricks. And if North discards a club and two hearts we see that West can throw North in with a heart or a diamond and North will have to lead a club to the West hand..

NS have 12 tricks in notrump or clubs on this board. Will they get to the slam with East's interference?

East would like to try a 3♠ preempt however we don't usually make that bid with an outside ace. Over the 2♠ preempt and South's double North will likely try 3♠ to show that she holds at least 13 HCPs.

South will show her clubs, North will raise in support and South will bid the club slam. Some Norths will correct to the notrump slam trusting that her partner holds the huge hand she is showing.

EW have a reasonable auction to get to their heart game.

South may lead a diamond which declarer will win in dummy. She will draw three rounds of trump and play a spade. The defense will win and return diamonds. Declarer will win and play a second round of spades establishing a trick for her side.

She will win two spades, four hearts, two diamonds, one diamond ruff and three clubs. That looks like 12 tricks however she will have lost two spade tricks so her side will score 11 tricks for a good result.

South will show her hearts and use Checkback Stayman to ask North whether she holds three heats or four spades after North jumps to 2NT showing her 19 HCPs. North will show her spades and South will bid the spade game.

We expect most North players to go down in their contract. East will lead a diamond which helps North as she will now win two diamond tricks.

North must drop the ♠Q doubleton offside and there is no reason for her to not consider the finesse. When West wins her K she should shift to a club noting the weakness in dummy.

So the defense should score one spade, one diamond and two clubs.

If West's opening lead is a club declarer should finesse and she will win six club tricks. However we suspect that on this auction West will lead a spade in an effort to "hit her partner." declarer will let the spade run to her hand. She will then try the club finesse herself.

She will have her nine tricks in two spades, one diamond and six clubs.

North will jam the auction. East sees big things in her hand as she has a spade void , heart support and outside aces. We think most East players will bid the slam directly.

The bonus on this board is that North will drop her doubleton club honors making declarer's club suit golden. There are 13 tricks with no difficulty.

If North leads a diamond the defense may score a trick as declarer will win the lead, draw trump and dislodge the remaining diamond honor for a club discard from her hand. This line will guarantee her slam. To expect to find the club honors doubleton is not reasonable.

We don't envision any EW pairs getting to a slam on this board. South will lead a heart. Declarer will holdup and win the second round.

She needs the diamond finesse for her ninth trick. As little as she might like taking the finesse there is no option. So East will eventually try the finesse and score nine tricks in four spades, one heart, two diamonds and two clubs.

East may pass rather than try a Weak Two Bid. In that case West will declarer 5♣. There is no reason for the partnership to seek out the notrump game as each member of the pair has a shapely hand. There are times when notrump scores better however this is not one of them.

If West is declarer in 3NT South will have a decision to make on the opening spade lead. North will start a spade. If South believes that North led from a four card suit then she should duck the first spade as West holds a singleton. South should infer that if West is going to bid notrump with a singleton that card must be the ♠A. The defense will now win five spades and one heart. If South covers with her ♠K then declarer has a second spade stopper and will have time to come to nine trick in notrump.

Playing the club game is fairly straightforward. Declarer (either East or West) will win the opening lead, draw trump then cash the A and lead a diamond toward dummy. The defense should win one heart and one diamond on this line.

An interesting sidenote is that if North leads a spade against 5♣ and South covers dummy's card then declarer can discard her losing diamond on dummy's high spade. Declarer can make an overtrick. The play may go a spade lead, a club to dummy, ♠Q (discarding a diamond,) heart exit from dummy. South will rise with her ace however declarer can ruff two hearts in dummy to make 12 tricks.

The race is with this board however declarer will come to nine tricks before the defense wins five.

North is tempted to lead a heart however she is forewarned that hearts is West's suit. She also knows that East holds diamonds so she will not lead that suit. We expect most North players will lead a club, the unbid suit. Unfortunately this will help declarer win a club trick as EW have the right club spots to generate a third club trick. With North contributing the ♣10 and the ♣8 the EW ♣9 and ♣7 combine to provide another trick for declarer.

West should read the lead of the ♣10 as a "top of nothing" lead and place the ♣QJ in the South hand. She should win dummy's ace and continue the suit. South will split her honors but declarer can win her king and play one more round of clubs.

Some Wests will take the time to show their diamond suit. Others will bid the notrump game directly.

North will likely lead a club. This generates a second trick for declarer in that suit on this layout. West will win the opening lead, play a heart to dummy and lead a diamond toward her hand. South should duck smoothly and declarer should finesse the J. Declarer will win North's return, come to dummy again and lead another diamond toward her hand finding the Q wirh South. this gives her four diamond tricks and an overtrick at her contract.

Ed Antosz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
 1♠Pass2♣
Pass2Pass4
All pass

North downgrades her hand when she hears South's club bid. (A singleton in partner's suit is usually not an asset.) The partnership will find their heart fit and if either member makes the slightest move toward slam they will get there.

The most likely route is that North may try 3 at her second turn to bid.

North's route to extra tricks is to ruff two spades in dummy. She can then draw trump and cash her top spades. She will have four spades, two spade ruffs, four hearts, one diamond and three clubs. (We know that's 14 tricks!!!)

West makes a strong opening and we think that East should show her values by bidding 2NT. This should show a flat hand with vales. West will bid the spade slam.

Everything woks on this board and declarer will make an overtrick. She will draw trump and test the diamonds. When the suit splits 3 - 3 she has her thirteenth trick.
