On this hand there was a TAKE OUT DOUBLE.

North opened 1 Heart.
East DOUBLED [Take Out Double]
South passed.

Lesson. If it goes 1 of a suit: Take out double. The partner of the take out double MUST BID SOMETHING (Unless Take Out Doubler's partner can SET the contract.

Partner of the take out doubler should JUMP if they have 9 or 10 HCP (Partnership chooses 9 or 10 level at which to jump)
West MUST bid 1 Spade or 2 Diamonds. My preference is to bid 1 Spade (the Major). If east doubles and bids again, E/W are in GAME!

IF East ever shows an interest in playing one of the Minors, WEST should NOT let partner
play Clubs. WEST should select Diamonds - YES, even with only 3 HCP!

ESPECIALLY with only 3 HCP.

Double Dummy, on the hand records, says E/W can make 4 Diamonds.

Here is a hand that shows why "top of nothing" can lead partner astray.

The contract twice was 5 Diamonds by South.

IF West leads 8 Clubs, East takes the Ace and King and sees partner play

HI - LOW! The 8 6 or 8 2, Both of which look like HI - LOW to me.
When a 3rd club is led, South's Q J of Clubs are "good".

MUD is much better. Middle-Up-Down. - So PARTNER will not be confused.

When there are 2 passes to South.

South opens 1 Diamond, correct?
West passes with 8 HCP and NOT having a 10-5-2 to overcall,

When North bids 1 Heart, South bids 1 Spade, not having 4 Hearts!!!!!

North bids 2 Spades (saying I have 4 Spades as well as 4 Hearts, and I have 6+ HCP, else I would probably NOT respond to your opening bid..

[Let me count points. South opened (12+) and North bid, showing 6+ points.

6 HCP added to 19 HCP, South knows their partnership have 25 HCP
which is G A M E ! ! ! !

Double Dummy says N/S can make 10 tricks in No Trump but make 11 Tricks in Spades! WHICH IS BETTER???????
N/S [in Spades] should loose the Ace of Clubs and Ace of Diamonds. The Queen of Trumps is finessable! 4 Spades +5 = 450 !!!!!
but, you have to take the finesse!

THE ONE WHO KNOWS --- GOES !!!!! DON'T INVITE GAME WHEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVE GAME!!!!!

NICE GAME STEVE & JANET

BARBARA AND AMY ALMOST "GOT" YOU!
I'm Rooting for Barbara & Amy! and awaiting to hear if any scores are to be changed! I'm sharpening my pencil right now!
