Typical matchpoint madness.

West's 1 response to 1 should be routine. Virtually any hand with a five-card major is worth a response to a minor-suit opening bid, especially when nonvulnerable. We would respond 1 with the same distribution even if the K was the 3.

North has a routine passed-hand takeout double of 1. South contented himself with 3 over 2 but felt obligated to double 3 to protect the score for 3.

North, with five-card trump support, decided to convert to 4. East made a matchpoint double of his own. The play in 4x will be stressful for both sides with the eventual result of down one likely.

After East passes, South opens 1, allowing West to make a a comfortable 1 call. North’s 1 now shows five, and East’s double is what many play as Snapdragon, 5+ of the unbid suit with two cards in the overcaller’s suit, and typically about 7+ points. South now volunteers 2, and North now has a decision. With South taken off the hook after East’s double, his 2 bid should show a real opener and some decent offense. With this in mind, North thought his hand was worth an invite, and chose a jump to 3. South had said his piece, and north south landed in what should be a popular contract.

This auction is not for the faint of heart. After two passes, North, in third seat, is certainly entitled take a call at these colors. North chose 1, both in an effort to keep spades alive, and get his partner to lead one of his better suits. 1 is ok, but could be misleading to your partner later on in the hand. It’s a good practice if you are going to open light in third suit, that you should have no problem with your partner leading that suit.

East must start with a Double with 20 points, and South made the choke-hold bid of 3. South is fairly certain this hand belongs to the opponents, either in notrump or some slam. Bidding 3 on a hand like this can often make the opponents life impossible. That being said, North - South had found themselves on the 3 level in a 7 card fit!

Fortunately for them, their opponents weren’t in on the joke. West made a card showing double, and East comfortably bid 3NT, even though they had at least 1100 against 3 doubled.
South must now divine a spade lead to hold this contract to ten tricks, very unlikely on the given auction. In fact, on a heart lead, South had to be careful. When East goes about his business, the K onside gives him ten top tricks. He can then force out the J to set up dummy’s 10 for the 11th trick. South MUST shift to a spade now, or North will find herself in a very nasty squeeze, with the wee 8 of spades growing up as a menace.

(The squeeze involves a 3 card ending where East leads out has the Q, 8, and a winning club; dummy has the 10 and the A8; North has the KJ and the Q. When East leads the last club and pitches the heart off dummy, North might as well just fold up his cards.)

660 should be about average to average plus on this board for East-West.

North-South had a good auction to slam here. Over North's game-forcing 2, South rebids 2, indicating the five-card diamond suit before showing the major-suit length. If North has length in a major, he can bid the suit, so a fit should not be missed.

Over 2, South's key attribute is the club support. North takes a preference to 3 with the strong doubleton, and South makes a quantitative bid of 4NT. Even if you play 4NT is your Blackwood bid for diamonds (the pair bidding this deal do not), 4NT should probably not be Blackwood on this auction. South can bid 4 to set diamonds as trumps and plan to bid 4NT on the next round.

North has an easy acceptance of South's slam invite. 6NT is the best spot, particularly at matchpoints.

East and West were on different wavelengths on this deal.

West's was light for the double, even for a passed hand. He had the short hearts, so he was afraid that East would be unable to reopen over 2. East was hoping for a bit more "stuff" from West and took a shot at 5.

Even if the play begins favorably for declarer, the 3-1 trump split will prove impossible to overcome. East can only ruff one heart in dummy, so he will fall at least one trick short. Still, that might produce a better score than defending 2.

  1. Cue bid

At neither vulnerable, South has an interesting decision about whether to come in with 2. One would surely like a better diamond suit, but it pays to be aggressive and get in there with the South hand though the decision is close. 2 and 3 are both normal given the start to the auction.

West now has a clear slam move. One of the better things you can do when you’re considering a slam move with a hand is look at partner’s opened minor. Here with a great club suit cue bidding 4 is an easy decision. Whether the East hand is supposed to cooperate is close. With two Aces and the QJ of trumps East should probably last train with 4. Here East didn’t but West had already decided to drive to slam opposite a spade control, so made the 5 cue bid. East bid 5 on the way in case West was looking for a grand slam, and East-West found themselves settle in a doomed slam as the cards lie.

A small note on the play here. After winning whatever the opening lead may be, it looks correct for declarer to draw exactly two trumps with the QJ before switching to clubs. If both defenders follow to two clubs then you can draw trumps and claim. If clubs do not split 3-2 and the defender with the short club also happens to have 2 or fewer hearts than you will be able to ruff a club small in dummy to make your contract.

All pass

This is one of the more exciting hands we have seen in a while. It starts quietly with two passes to East. 1 and 2 both seem normal, and that is when the fun begins. West is looking at SIX! spades. With a flat hand (in context of a six card suit) and vulnerable vs. not, 4 could actually end up going down 2 for 500 into the opponents +420/+450. With that being said, it is going to be impossible to sell out to 4, so it is best advice to bid to the limit of your hand immediately putting the opponents to the last guess. From here on out every bid could be described most simply as “I don’t know if the opponents can make what they bid and we shouldn’t be down much if any,” finally culminating in 6. Neither East nor West have any idea whether 6 is making, but it certainly doesn’t feel like 6 is with either hand, and again, being vulnerable, it can get expensive quickly, so both pass.

The play in 6 is interesting only in so much as the correct line appears to be to eliminate the pointed suits, that is to ruff all the diamonds and spades so that the only cards left are clubs and hearts (four clubs and one heart in each hand) ending in North and cashing a high club. If clubs are 3-2 nothing matters so we will worry about 4-1 clubs.

If you see an honor from West go ahead and cash another high honor. You will be able to make the overtrick if West started with QJ tight and will be able to lead towards the 10 if West started with a stiff honor. If you see small from both defenders you will lead small towards the ten. If East started with QJxx he must play an honor and will find himself endplayed into either leading away from the other club honor or giving a ruff-sluff.

If you see an honor from East you will play small out of your hand. If East wins with the other honor you're home (though may have lost out on an overtrick). If East shows out then you will duck and West will be endplayed into giving a ruff-sluff or leading away from the other honor into your ten. This is slightly better than leading away from AKxx without cashing one because it allows for an overtrick if West holds exactly QJ tight. Note on the actual hand it doesn’t matter as clubs are 3-2.

  1. Good Heart raise
  2. Roman Keycard Blackwood (1430)
  3. 1 or 4 Keycards
  4. Confirms all keycards, interest in grand slam
  5. King of spades
  6. Punt, looking for 7NT instead of 7H

Another high level decision! The bidding begins with East who holds 21 HCP. However, HCP do not solely determine a hand. Aces and Kings are worth more than their allotted value in Goren’s original counting method. It also totally discounts the value of 10’s which are valuable in their own right. Overall this hand is worth a lot more than the 21 points it adds up to, so should open 2.

After the 2 opener South has an easy 3 bid. Being vulnerable and flat there is always the risk that you could go for 500 into their non-vulnerable game of 400-460, but your suit is solid and there are not very many people who are solid in their agreements about interference over their strong 2 bid.

West has very few options here but to bid naturally. After 3 by West, East’s hand is fantastic. It has all four aces, a pretty solid suit in spades that may provide tricks, and great intermediate trumps. Since new suits would be natural and 4 would just show a minimal hand, 4 must show a great hand. It also has the upside of allowing partner to bid keycard, which is great on this hand since most of East’s hand is tied up in keycard and can be revealed.

Now the West hand really only cares about keycards (although knowing East’s diamond length would be ideal), and can bid 4 Kickback. Kickback is a convention that allows a partnership to bid Roman Keycard with the step over the trump suit rather than 4N, which saves a step on auctions like this. East shows four keycards and now West is thinking Grand. He confirms all the keycards and asks for more information. 5 shows the king of spades and now West has a decision to make. Bidding a grand slam here rates to be odds on but which one? There isn't a clear correct answer here, and maybe along the same line of thinking West made a creative 7 bid. Since the partnership is already committed to the 7-level, this has to be a choice of slams. East with a balanced hand has no reason not to want to play in NT and since it is matchpoints has an easy 7NT bid. There are 13 top tricks here in 7NT//.
