Slam? Surely you jest. With three small diamonds, West will not see slam as a potential goal, and even more aggressive auctions will not lead either partner to the conclusion that slam is a good prospect.

Funny thing -- some players try to cash aces against slams, so if West bids 6 and North leads the A, all thirteen tricks roll in. An example against leading aces against slams. Especially in a suit bid by the opponents!

Looking just at the EW cards, I'd say that slam is about 52% -- The odds for 2-2 hearts plus a singleton Q falling, plus .001 for an opening lead of a small singleton trump!

East can just close his eyes and wait for the result, predestined to being a bystander on this hand. Time to rest the brain for the next hand. Just turn the dummy as called, please.

West is frustrated, of course, having been deprived of all of those slam and game bonuses dreamed of. But North paid attention well by bidding twice and doubling after the initial pass. Learning about South's values made all of the difference between an early undisciplined action by North and a later fully informed course of action.

East might push a bit, but those trumps are awfully weak, and the JT don't amount to anything. It would be a full stretch to invite with 3 after the Stayman response, and West has just 15 HCP, so game seems unlikely across the field.

But the defense has just two aces and one trump trick to take, no more.

To make 4, East needs to find the J and for diamonds to be 3-3. A part score is all that is called for, but the play is the thing. A passive 8 lead from South looks best, aggressive action not being required and even discouraged by the auction. East wins the K and leads a heart. If diamonds are 3-3, he need not guess the hearts correctly now, and can put up the K. Is South up to ducking? That'll cook the goose proper, that will!

Then a diamond to the king and another heart to the Q and the defense prevails.

Too often the defense relinquishes control of the trump suit or gives away the location of the honors prematurely. The A was going nowhere, and the only risk was that North might have QJx. How likely is that? South played for the actual situation by ducking and was rewarded.

Playing Lebensohl , South's 3 bid might have been at the low edge of a Game Force , but the 3 bid clearly showed spades and no heart stopper -- Stayman. And so the proper contract was reached.

  Pass1
Pass1Pass1
Pass1Pass1NT
Pass3All pass

The auction given will enrage various segments of the bidding public. Some would not open the South hand. Others, of the extremist Walsh persuasion, would bypass the diamond suit (including your author!). Their partners would not recognize the situation and rebid 1NT or 2 rather than 1.

Those in the more mundane world of up-the-line persuasion will simply bid as in the diagram, wondering what in the world is the problem!

The Walsh players will have a tiny problem how to invite after bypassing diamonds. That will depend on another factor - New Minor Forcing ? Or XYZ ? 2 would be New Minor Forcing , while xyz players use 2 as a demand/relay to 2, followed by a pass or invitational values, while a 2 rebid is an artificial game force!

In new minor forcing, after 1NT a 3 bid shows a WEAK hand with long diamonds and a spade suit, which is a bit of a misdescription, while xyz players can bid 2, forcing 2, and then 3 is invitational to game. While South is not accepting any invitations today, note that 2-2 diamonds would lead to a making diamond game!

Despite all of that, if South opens the bidding, NS are headed for a diamond partial, and there is no problem in the play.

If South passes, Third seat is probably enough of an excuse for West to open 1, eying a major suit partial, but North can choose to bid diamonds or use a Top and Bottom 2 bid, if available, thereafter competing in diamonds for a while. North will prevail in the auction.

Unless the defense helps declarer by setting up spades before attacking hearts, North can make exactly 2NT, no more and no less.

Even a club lead does no damage, for the run of the diamond suit may be a sticky problem for EW, it can be solved. East can afford to signal by discarding clubs, suggesting either major suit.
West might think to give suit preference for hearts and discourage in spades to help.

If West's 2 bid as a passed hand continues to suggest good values, near a limit raise, playing Inverted Minors even by a passed hand, then East can show his maximum balanced hand with 2NT, electing to do so with both majors well stopped.

With the K and A wrong, that's the limit. With 25 HCP, many will take the aggressive road and fail in 3NT, without condemnation from here. Bad luck on a heart lead. Needed a second heart stop and some more. Lack of a source of tricks was a major problem, overcoming mere HCP.

A problem-free auction, for a change! The Negative Double located the spade fit and the South hand sees game while discounting slam, so the one who knows goes.

Declarer must be careful to avoid the bad play of leading the T from dummy! That play should be understood as bad by the lack of a crucial spade spot, and the failure to recognize the danger will surely cost many players who will do well to learn the concept from a misplay here.

Declarer takes an easy eleven tricks, provided the proper trump play is made, else ten.

Here is a vast difference between board 3 and this board: The 2-2 diamond break assures eleven tricks, while a 3-1 split would endanger or scuttle that contract to down two! Of course, on the auction, HYPOTHETICALLY, if, on the first diamond, East were to play the J or Q, the right play would be to finesse next, using the principle of Restricted Choice . Given the weak two heart bid, the odds would have been much higher than the customary 2-1 in favor of that play.

But digression aside, the NS values and bidding deserve being rewarded.

No, there is no advocacy for a 5 opening bid. However, no other auction poses a problem, as NS will float into 4 making otherwise.

The point of looking at the auction after 5 is to reveal the different thinking required of the partner of the doubler. There is no assurance that the double is of the pure takeout double pattern. It is purely and simply a declaration of values. So South should not strain to bid, nay, should strain NOT do bid, with unexceptional pattern! Pass and stay fixed, if fixed, reap rewards for partner's double when right. Taking out a double of a five level opening bid should be relegated to hands described as "exceptional."

For that reason, if advancer WERE to take the double out, The doubler should not have doubts, and trust partner to produce the unusual hand promised.

5 doubled will collapse after two clubs, one diamond, and two hearts are assured. After the first two clubs, North might do best by leading a low club for South to ruff, effectively killing the dummy's clubs and giving North another out card.

North's sequence shows, of course, a balanced 18-19, so South counts points in the balanced auction, gets 26-27 on his abacus, and notes the presence of several nines and tens. "3NT!"

Nine tricks are available without much problem if care is taken to remove West's potential entry to the long spades. With red finesses safe, get clubs on the table!

If the opponents set up clubs as well, then lead the Curse of Scotland (9) and run it. Then shift to hearts twice. Nine tricks are thus ensured.

Bringing home this club suit without loss PLUS having the diamond finesse work is the key to this "grand slam hand!" Not for mere mortals.

The 3NT game is reasonable, though, with chances for a second heart stopper (NOT!), but with that plus the club suit's potential, 3NT is a good matchpoint "gamble."

Rewarded!

East's hand is worth about 18-19 points in support of hearts, so 3 is clearly justified. West has nice values, but the prospect of making slam is just not within the visual sphere. If East had a sixth club, sure thing. If East had a sixth club and a spade void, seven is dependent only on a 3-2 heart split. But East should bid differently with those holdings: 4 with the first, and 3 with the second!

4 is called the "Convention With No Name," and shows a good six card suit (sometimes the author will prescribe a solid suit) and four trumps for partner's major.

3 would be a Splinter raise of hearts, not necessarily promising a void, but surely stimulating partner's imagination so that slam exploration would later reveal the void and the potential would exist for finding the true limit of the hand.

The auction as described seems routine. The digression was for the purpose of reeling West in from fantasies, based on the partnership's understanding of the alternatives and its discipline in applying them.

  1. DONT
  2. Invitational with useful heart values

When the opponents bid two suits and a cue bid is appropriate to express values, choose the on in which you have good values. When a major suit is in play, cue bids should be supportive of the idea. When minor suits are in the mix, so is notrump, and the cue bid should show a stopper for notrump, not ask. Minor suit auctions often give way to notrump, while major suits should be given the nod as being supported by cue bids.

Easy slam, dependent on lucky clubs, but the risk is both justified and properly rewarded.

If North bids 3 on his first chance, East is worth 3. If North bids 4, East should allow himself to be pushed to 4, and the rest is the same.

On an initial 4 bid by North, South will surely save as high as necessary.

West just won't be pushed around! No room for science, just probabilities. Slam here is based on partnership confidence that East has his bid, and is not monkeying around vulnerable over a preempt!

No need for the club finesse. Just draw trumps and discard all of East's clubs on the diamond suit! Taking a finesse in clubs reveals a need for proper visualization of the potential of the long suit.
