1. After a cue bid (Michaels or otherwise) of partner's suit, it is better to show support for partner's suit by doubling than to announce to the opponents that they have made a mistake and are about to pay.
2. Strong hand, showing interest in game or more.
3. Showing even more power and now confirming controls in both enemy suits.
4. Side suit strength.

Now let it be clear that the club bid showed a good value, here the K, reluctant though it was. As such it is definitely a control bid in clubs and proves valuable to East, despite technically violating the admonition against control bidding second round controls at the five level for the first time in the suit.

East is fully justified in bidding this strongly -- that is a four loser hand you are looking at in East, with no fewer than eight controls (A=2, K=1). It is no wonder that a small slam is laydown and a grand slam makeable.

Making seven is simple -- draw trumps, cash one top heart and one top club and run every single diamond and then play a club to the ace to a two card ending. West will have the A and the 7, while East keeps two hearts. Pray tell, what two cards would you like to keep as South? A spade discard sets up the queen, while a heart discard allows East's T to take the last, thirteenth, trick.

I don't see many bidding game NS, nor, frankly, making ten tricks after a diamond lead, setting up a club and a diamond trick. The key to making four is finding EAST with the A, doubleton, no less, despite West's takeout double.

On the other hand, there being no benefit in finding the doubler with the ace, perhaps playing the suit in the winning fashion is, after all, rational!

West makes a rather sound 2 preempt and then North and East announce their presence in turn -- and fully justified, as 2 and 3 are making contracts. Then North doubles to express values and South suggests playing a fit as being better than defending without defensive values. East than admits to owning support for diamonds

And suddenly there is silence and a plus score.

We should not blame East for bidding with good values and a good suit. Unlucky, I say, that partner's opening bid was two-thirds in the suit bid by the opponents.

Duplication of values and an offside J cause consternation to a befuddled and frustrated East.

  1. 1 Round force, intending to bid 3 as a limit raise with three trumps. No other sequence makes much sence. Too strong for 2, too weak for a 2/1 bid.

North redoubled for lack of a better way to describe this hand. A good use for a redouble! South follows thrrough with the plan and North plays game, making easily, and there is no reason to fail to make eleven tricks except through oversight. One attractive way to play in case of a trump lead and continuation is to overtake the K and play a ruffing finesse against the marked Q and make oodles of heart tricks.

  1. Playing four way transfers, this bid shows clubs. No fancy methods here, just showing the acceptance.
  2. Singleton.

Showing singletons after a minor transfer is a common and good method. Showing singletons whenever possible is a good idea, for hand evaluation knows no better tool than knowing where partner has shortness. Here, East knows that a suit contract is not promising, but 3NT is.

The method makes the hand really easy to bid.

How much ink has been used trying to find the best way to make a game try after a major suit single raise? How much confusion still exists? Unfortunately, this hand is not going to be an exhibit that suggests one method over another, instead showing that sometimes it just does not matter!

For example, a kitchen-style 1 2 3 will get you there, although without much Precision . The same method coupled with short suit game tries and long suit/help suit tries would Feature the same auction but with a different slant -- accept with top honors and a combination of four card support and a ruffing value, or just two aces... It works fine.

"Most loser" game tries have less appeal and are rather ambiguous, although apparently popular. For example, with xxx in a suit, the purist definition of this method would argue for an acceptance with a singleton in the suit. But what about Qxx or Kxx? Qxx might well be a disaster, and Kxx not a real solution. Besides, when holding xxx, how likely is it that the hand qualifies for a game try? On the other hand, Axx, Kxx, Qxx or the same with the jack, are useful not so much because of being a "most loser," but because of the possibility of finding "fitting honors." The game try in which a suit is bid hoping for a filling honor (especially the queen - will return to this in a minute) is not a "most loser" try. It is a "help suit" or "long suit" try in the sense that any honor in the suit will be useful.

But wait! Aces and kings pretty much take care of themselves, and can stand up in a 1-2-3 try. So perhaps a new suit game try should be thought of as a method to tell partner that a queen in the "trial suit" is going to be useful? Of course, a king would also be useful, and aces are by definition useful.

So North has a game try hand -- six losers, using the Losing Trick Count, and should make a game try. 2 finds South with TWO fitting honors. 4 is the quick and accurate answer.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

On a good day, West would make eleven tricks and we would be concerned to ensure bidding the game. Today, however, the K is offside and the defense gets a bonus ruff, for down one.

Bidding this game is reasonable. Failing to defeat the bid game will be a disaster for NS.
The opening lead will be a problem, but at the end of the day, South will be able to score the K and switch to the J to get all of the defensive tricks.
