Playing Soloway-style jump shifts, the 3 bid showed good club support along with the known spade suit and promised a singleton diamond. East was unable to raise spades on the first round for lack of a spade honor with at least three cards in the suit, but now might have Kx. Unable to discount Kx AJ98 J4 QT986, in this modern era of light openers, 6 making seems a better idea than 6NT down when the opponents run diamonds. A far-fetched idea, not worthy of consideration when partner is a reliable, conservative opener. If partner is rock-solid, West should bid 6NT.

That was a tame auction! But who else could bid, and what would it be? 2 by West would surely be taking a good thought too far. Diamonds are independently strong, so the three card heart support should take a back seat. 3 by West is possible, but if East does not have enough to bid again, game is out of reach. 2 gives partner room to describe a better hand.

A normal result, duplicated on the score sheet even if North-South find a way to compete.

Just about as routine and average as you can get. A club and a diamond to lose. That's it. Two spade finesses will provide an escort for one club loser.

  1. Sandwich notrump, showing length and playability in the two unbid suits.
  2. Support double, showing three spades.

Four tricks to lose in a spade contract, but also in notrump! Nobody's bidding 3NT, of course, or staying there, with East's heart void.

Although Deep Finesse says EW can make only 1NT, that is conceding the opening lead to the enemy. Defending 1NT with the advantage of the opening lead on this hand will do better, for with best play, North will play on hearts to net two spades, two hearts, and but one of his minor kings. Down two looks like the best North can manage. Minus 200, but it's matchpoints, and that will actually be a fairly common score with some declarers getting flustered or giving up for a bigger minus.

Close your eyes and take every single finesse in sight -- and by the way, drop the T! Nothing to it -- shoot the moon.

Sure. After the diamond lead, declarer will likely duck twice and then lead three rounds of clubs from the top, crossing fingers that South cannot get in. That won't be enough, however, and on a heart return declarer will need to hold his breath and take that finesse. When the air is let out and the finesse works, might as well take a free spade finesse.

Joy.

Pass14!!4!

7!!All pass

Welcome to my opium parlor, where everyone plays in total rhythm with my dream state.

1) After Weak two bids, many play jump overcalls to four of a minor as two-suited hands defined as the suit bid and the other major. Although some give a false name -- Leaping Michaels Cue Bid -- and others mistakenly "Roman Jump Overcalls," the correct name is Schleifer, after Meyer Schleifer, the Hall of Famer (look him up in the Encyclopedia of Bridge). According to Max Hardy, in "Competitive Bidding With Two Suited Hands," Schleifer invented this "minor and the other major" jump overcall, "Michaels" has uncertainty about which minor is held. and "Roman Jumps" are the suit bid and the next higher, so 4 would show clubs and diamonds. "Schleifer" is the proper name. "Leaping Schleifer" if it helps mnemonically.

1a) A few of my partners and I have been experimenting with expanding Schleifer to occasions when the opponents raise their major from one to two, and even when one opponent simply opens one of a major, with the idea that the sooner the overcaller describes his hand completely, the better for his side. There may not be time to bid both suits in really distributional hands, so do it NOW! Thus East's 4 bid shows game values with clubs and spades. Can you deny the accuracy of that definition relative to East's hand? Didn't think so.

2) In heavy competition, new suits tend to show concentration of values or lead-direction guidance while promising support for partner's suit -- hence 4 by South.

3) As a passed hand, West cannot have much better support, and such joy is best expressed by a cue bid. Reference forty years of Master Solvers' Club experience! So, 4 screams to be bid.

4) North tries as hard as he can to crowd the bidding, but the idea blows up in face of East's masterful six level control bid of 6. Already forced to slam by the bid, Can West doubt that his cards must be what partner needs for the grand slam he seeks? 7 like a BOSS!
