  1. Mixed Raise, 7-9 HCP, 4+ support

Although a few N/S pairs might stop short of game, most will be bidding 4 on this hand, and it will be up to East to decide whether to sacrifice over this with 4. If East does bid 5, N/S are more likely to double this than to try to play 5. On the lie of the cards, 5 will be off two, 4 will make and 5 will also make if declarer gets the suit right, which they are likely to do if East has overcalled 2. If East starts with a preempt, it will be harder for declarer to get the suit right.

The first bidding decision will actually be faced by South, at many tables. North has a normal 1 opening, and the East hand looks too strong for preempting in my opinion. Even slam could be in the picture for E/W with West still an unpassed hand. Assuming East bids 2, South has a hand type which will be very familiar to regular readers of my analysis. South has four card trump support but a hand that is a bit too strong for a weak raise, or a 2 bid, with some defense, but not a good enough hand to show as a limit raise. The expert terminology for this hand is a "Mixed Raise", as it is a mixture of hand types. Most experts will have a way to show this hand type on almost all auctions. On this particular auction, one common agreement is to use a jump shift one under partner's suit to show the Mixed Raise, an approach which is illustrated by the 3 bid on the bidding diagram. Other experts might use 2NT on this auction, or 3 (giving up the weak raise to 3) to show a Mixed Raise. It might seem strange to give up a weak raise in order to have a bid to show a Mixed Raise, but Mixed Raises come up more often than almost any other hand type and many experts would rather have a Mixed Raise in their repertoire than a weak raise. Notice that with no Mixed Raise available, South is forced to either underbid with 2, or show a much weaker hand with 3, and North might not bid 4 after either of those bids. For further examples of a Mixed Raise (and to illustrate how common they are), you can look at the analysis from 2/6/2017, 12/7/2016, 8/10/2016, 5/25/2016, 5/11/2016, and 3/2/2016 and a number of older hands as well.

Opposite a Mixed Raise, North has an easy game, despite holding the singleton Q, as South is likely to have values in the suit. If East decides to bid 5, it is hard to see how N/S can find a 5 bid. Most South hands where 5 will make need to have strength sitting over East, in which case it is likely to be better to double 5. On the actual hand, E/W have a secondary fit, so that South has shortness, which means that 5 will, in fact, make as long as declarer plays East for the Ace. With 5 only going down two, N/S will need to play in a game to get a good score.

  1. Fit-showing jump, 5+s, 4+s, 9-11 HCP

In third seat, a case can be made for West to open 1, 2 or even 3. At this favorable vulnerability, the hand looks a little strong for 2 or 3, especially since E/W might have a good fit, but in third seat it is certainly tempting and many will be preempting. However, I have shown the West hand opening 1 partly because it allows me to illustrate several important bidding principle. After North overcalls 1, East knows that their side likely has a a good fit, but should certainly double, as they have a fit for s as well, and sufficient values to compete to three level. South has a very good hand for North in s. If you just read my analysis from last hand, you might find the 3 bid in the bidding diagram curious, as I just finished explaining how many expert players use a one under jump shift to show a Mixed Raise, and the South hand is worth significantly more than that on this hand. The reason for this is that the "one under jump shift" agreement is usually only in place when other bids for a Mixed Raise are not available. The bidding sequence shown is slightly different than the one on Board 1, an in particular, from South's perspective, the opponents have opened the bidding and his partner has overcalled, rather than the other way around. Almost all experts would use a 3 bid here (a jump cue bid of the opponents first suit) to show a Mixed Raise, freeing up 3 to mean something else. Although by no means universal, many experts use a jump shift in competition to be a "fit-showing jump", promising at least a four cards in both the suit bid, and partner's suit, and at least nine cards total between the two suits, as well as values appropriate for the level of the suit bid. This allows partner to quickly evaluate how well the hands fit for game, or slam and for defensive purposes. Here, with a full opening count and a good suit, North can expect a good suit from South, particularly in light of East's double (South would not make a fit showing jump with a poor suit that East is likely to hold length in.) Based on this, North can bid the game. As it happens, the poor split will make game a little more challenging for declarer, but as long as they are careful to cash the Ace as their first play in trump, they can prevail without even taking the finesse by ruffing a low, ruffing a high while cross ruffing the rest of the hand. +620 will be an excellent result for N/S.

Pass4All pass

N/S should play 4 at almost all tables. The South hand in some ways is too strong for a 1NT opening, as there are 4.5 quick tricks, and Aces and Kings are somewhat undervalued with the normal HCP evaluation method. However, I would not want to open 1 on this hand and then follow it with a NT bid showing 18-19, as the suit is so poor, and partner will never expect that when I show a good overall hand. All the values being outside of the long suit weakens the hand somewhat, and opening 1NT looks normal to me. Of course, when North ends up revealing a nine card fit, the South hand suddenly goes up quite a bit in value, and South will worry about missing slam. Should South bid again over 4, holding such an incredible hand for s. It's certainly not completely unreasonable, especially if N/S don't have a way for North to show some mild slam interest for s. (Most experts will use a 4 or 4 bid after a major suit response to Stayman to show a balanced hand with slam interest. North isn't quite strong enough for that here, though.) If South does open 1, North might just call their hand a game forcing raise and bid 2NT, but then will not cooperate with any further slam tries. South might just go straight to asking for keycards over a 2NT bid, but if they discover that one keycard and the Queen of trump are missing should stop in 5s. As it happens, 6 depends only on the 2-2 break, and when that break happens, 12 tricks will come rolling in, making pairs happy who bid the pushy slam.

3NTAll pass

West has a normal 1NT opening, and holding 8 HCP and a five card suit, East should invite to game. West has a maximum and an easy game acceptance. Unless South has snuck in a bid, which would be risky with no shortness and vulnerable, North is unlikely to find the deadly lead, and will almost certainly lead a major suit. With unlimited entries to the East hand, the safest way to play the suit would be to lead towards the QJ twice, but with only one dummy entry, West should start with the Queen from their hand, with still some hopes of bringing in the suit for no losers, depending on where the King and 10 are. As it happens, the suit will come in for one loser no matter what declarer does and nine tricks will be made at almost every table.
