Is the first board of the afternoon a sign of things to come for North/South? They have a simple auction to get to the heart game. south will be declarer and everything works on this layout. Our declarer may make two overtricks.

West may lead a spade. South will call for the ♠J from dummy and this will hold, giving declarer three tricks in the suit. (Although this dies not help declarer, it feels good to win everything you can.)

Declarer must guess to find the Q. If she guesses to finesse East for that card she will make two overtricks. Her only other loser will be the ♣A.

After she has drawn trump she will try the diamond finesse. Not only does the finesse work but the king drops doubleton making dummy's diamonds good tricks.

When South leads a club toward dummy she cannot err on this layout. If West rises with the ace then declarer has her entry to dummy in the ♣K. West however will likely duck the first club and declarer will have her entry to dummy regardless whether she calls for the king or the ♣9.

Ed Antosz Hand Analysis

It's not often we rake tie to discuss a board which may be passed out however that may happen on this board.

West has 11 HCPs but she doesn't have a hand which she can open.. Yes, today's game is very aggressive but on this board we think many Wests will pass. (If West does open her partner will respond 1NT and play there.)

North of course will pass. East in third seat will strive to open however she too only has 11 HCPs and a flat hand. She can open 1♣ and rebid 1NT however her opening does not make life difficult for South on this board. We think most Easts will, after some consideration pass.

South counts her HCPs and the number of spades in her hand. That total is 14. Using Cansino Count or the Pearson Count, South should come to 15 to open her hand. So we think South will pass as well.

If EW do open they will end in 1NT played by East. South will lead a diamond and declarer will scramble to seven tricks. The opening lead will give her three tricks in the suit. If she uses a second diamon to get to dummy to try the club finesse she will make her contract. The club finesse loses however she has three club tricks and the ♠A to bring her to seven tricks. At some tables she may win a heart trick as well.

South must lead a spade to set the contract. (She must also not block the suit and jettison her ♠k at some point.) This will give the defense four spades, two hearts and one club.

Unlike the situation on Board 1, South will open her 11 HCP hand as she holds a six card suit. Her hand has shape and her values are for the most part in her longer suits.

North has aspirations for greatness when she hears her partner open and is thinking that a slam is a possibility however once South shows a minimum opener, North will settle for the heart game.

Our guess us that West will lead the ♣J. The defense will take the first trick. Est will eventually score her ♠A. That will be the extent of the defense on this board.

Declarer has no options to discard a loser on any suits and will lose the two black aces.

South opens and her rebid will be 2NT to show her values. This is not a perfect bid as she does hold a singleton spade honor however nothing else describes her hand. At times bidding in bridge is a matter of lesser evils.

North will show her spades and when she hears her partner's strength she will check to see if South has three spades. As soon as South denies that holding North will settle for the notrump game.

West will struggle to decide her opening lead however all her agony will be for naught as the defense will only win their two aces.

West may lead a heart, the unbid major. Declarer will win and set about dislodging the A. She will win the return and dislodge the ♣A.

South has more than 11 tricks on this board however the defense will score two before South gets to tally her 12.

North will rebid her suit to show a minimum hand. South has only two card support however that support is golden. She sets her sights on slam.

Unfortunately most pairs do not have a good system to probe for a slam after North's 2♠ bid. South can make forcing bids by bidding new suits however she wants to let North in on the secret. In the end she just might try Blackwood.

As a rule we don't use Blackwood with an unsupported suit headed by a queen. But nothing else works. After giving it some thought she realizes that if North shows one ace or keycard she can stop in 5♠. If North has two she should be safe at the six level. So perhaps this is one time one can break the rule.

When dummy comes down it's clear to North that the outcome of the contract hinges on the club suit. If the club finesse works she will make 13 tricks. If the club finesse fails then he will only make 12 tricks. The heart finesse looks like an option however it is irrelevant to the outcome of the board. Even if the heart finesse works declarer must still try the club finesse.(Note that she can discard a heart from the North hand on South's high diamonds.)

Let's consider play if East leads a heart. North should call for the ace from dummy and unblock her high spades. She can come to her hand with a diamond to draw the remaining trump. She gets to dummy with a diamond, cashes the third diamond to discard a heart and tries the club finesse.

EW have a civil and scientific auction to get to the spade game. East opens, West bids her longer major first and East jumps in notrump to show the strength of her hand. West will now make a Checkback bid asking partner for either four hearts or three spades. East shows her spade fragment and West bids the game.

North may lead the ♣J even though East opened the bidding in clubs. No matter the lead, declarer should only lose two tricks. West will win the opening lead to play a spade to the ace and then a spade toward her queen. South can take her spade trick at her leisure as it's not going away.

Eventually the defense will get the A. Declarer can discard her third diamond on dummy's ♣A if she feels it necessary. On this layout she will lead diamonds toward dummy. When North takes the A declarer's diamond worries will disappear.

East may consider slam with her hand. She needs little from partner to make 12 tricks. She has excellent trump support in that she holds the A and four pieces. She has a diamond void and more importantly a six - card sidesuit. From East's perspective we East can see her spades as a source of tricks and she should consider moving toward slam. West, with her aceless hand will apply the brakes.

Declarer can easily establish the spade suit. It requires that she cash her high spades and ruff once in dummy.

Interestingly, if declarer wins the opening lead, cashes two spades and ruff high with the J she also finds the location of the queen of trump. When North does not overruff declarer learns that the queen is in the South hand. So declarer can play a heart to the ace in dummy and take the marked heart finesse. She can ruff a diamond to return to dummy to discard two clubs and one diamond on the good spades.

While some South player may pass we expect that most will open the South hand. South has a good suit if she needs a rebid and most of her HCPs are located in her two suits.

West must double to show her strength. She will bid notrump at her next turn. This sequence shows a hand with more than 18 HCPs. (Most play that the direct overcall promises 15 - 18 HCPs so the double followed by the notrump bid must show more.) East will bid the notrump game.

North will lead the J. This lead is harmless however when the 8 falls from the North hand declarer can develop three diamond tricks. The EW hands have the right spots to sandwich South's diamonds. (Declarer knows South started with four diamonds since she bid the suit. Attention to the diamond cards will help declarer play the suit successfully.)

Declarer has three spade tricks as well as two heart tricks. She needs to develop at least one club trick. She will get to dummy to lead a club toward her hand.

South will rise with a high club honor but she is powerless. The nest she can do is to continue spades. If she continues clubs she will be doing declarer's work for her. If she continues with a heart she will establish a third heart trick for declarer as West AK will capture two of the missing heart honors. West can concede a heart to establish a third heart.

West will do a lot of scrambling as the defense will dictate which nine tricks she gets. Her contract however will never be in jeopardy.

North makes a Negative Double which is not textbook however her hand is too good to pass. A direct heart bid promises five so that's not an option. The double does promise four spades as well as four hearts however bridge bidding is not always perfect.

West will lead the 9. East should encourage rather than take her ace immediately. Her intention is to give her partner a ruff if the defense can gain the lead.

So declarer will win the opening lead, cash the A and exit a heart. West will take her king and play a diamond to partner for a ruff.

The difficulty the defense faces on this board is that East cannot both lead a club through declarer's ♣K and give West a ruff. East will win the lead only once and she can't accomplish both tasks. So the defense will get either two clubs one diamond, one heart and one spade or one diamond and a diamond ruff, one club, one spade and one heart.

One might think that if the defense scores the diamond ruff they can wait for declarer to play the club suit however that is not the case. Declarer can come to eight tricks before she must play clubs, She will get two spades, three hearts and three diamonds.
