Ugh. I don't know about this deal. I think I'd open the North hand 1, but the jacks aren't great. If North passes, I don't know if East opens, but that's possible. South is hoping to defend against hearts, but West will always bid some number of spades. On the auction shown, East is a little stuck for a second bid and might choose to let 1 go (if it is NF) or maybe bid 1NT. That won't please South, but neither would putting down a dummy in 2 (if North made the mistake of bidding again). If West gets a second chance, she'll probably bid more spades, but how many?

Against some number of spades, North is going to be unhappy on opening lead. Diamonds are the unbid suit, and that lead is probably the safest. Declarer will be optimistic about any spade contract. She has only one loser in spades, one in diamonds and one in clubs. She'll win the first trick in dummy and lead a spade to the J. North wins and should know that a diamond continuation won't work (from partner's trick 1 signal). If North finds a heart (or the A) then the defenders should find their way to a club ruff. If North exits with another diamond, declarer will take 10 tricks. South would really like to lead out of turn on this deal.

After two passes, West has options in third seat. In first or second seat, this would be a normal 1 opening, but here it pays to put a little pressure on your vulnerable opponents. Third seat preempts can be wide-ranging since you know that partner doesn't have a big hand and here, the only way you'll find a game is if partner has a big fit with you. North overcalls 2NT showing an opening notrump and South uses Stayman . When North bids 3 South doesn't have room to invite so just has to guess whether to bid game. Since partner could have a little extra (with 18 or even 19 balanced, you might feel stuck bidding 2NT), South should probably just bid game.

This is another good game that will go down on a ruff. West should be able to tell that the 2 is a singleton on this auction. Declarer will win the first trick (playing low from dummy) and now play a heart. West wins and will give partner a ruff. Should West try to signal suit-preference with her lowest diamond or play the Q to smother the J? Leading low might seem dangerous if East doesn't have the A as now declarer has an extra diamond winner but can only pitch one club from dummy. East can ruff the diamond and has to guess the suit to return. If partner signals for clubs, this play is simpler.

South passes and West opens the bidding with 1 on an ugly 12-count and North might choose to get involved with the Michaels cuebid shown at these colors in spite of the ugly heart suit. East needs to show a very good hand, and the way to do that is to cuebid the known suit--hearts. This promises a limit-raise or better. West signs off in 3 and East should respect that West is not interested in anything more and bid only 4. Control bidding 4 on the way would be fine, but West will try to end the auction at every opportunity.

North leads a heart, probably, and declarer can win in either hand. counting losers , it looks like declarer is off just two aces and potentially another trick or two in diamonds. Declarer's plan should be to draw trump and eventually pitch diamonds on hearts or clubs. Declarer knows that splits are likely to be bad, but there's not much she can do about that. She should win the first trick in her hand with the K (to keep entries to dummy's clubs) and play a spade. South wins and needs to do some counting. She knows partner has five hearts and five diamonds and at least one spade. She also knows that if partner only has 1 spade, that means declarer started with 7 spades and didn't want to be in game opposite a limit-raise (unlikely) so partner has at least two spades and at most one club. If you have a partner who leads from Jxxxx against a suit contract instead of leading a singleton, you should get a new partner. Eureka! Partner must have a club void. South should lead back the 2 to suggest a card in diamonds. This thoughtful play will hold declarer to 10 tricks.

Michael Berkowitz Hand Analysis

3Pass4All pass

West opens 1, East raises to 2 and, after South passes (don't get involved on the 3-level vulnerable with a balanced 11 count, please), West needs to decide between a game-try and simply bidding 4. Either way could be right, but even with West making a game try in diamonds, East should accept to get the pair to 4.

North leads the Q against 4 and declarer will have to consider what to do. With limited entries, it seems right to win this in dummy (pitching a club) and lead a low spade towards hand. South plays the A and has nothing good to do. A club seems like a good idea (it's usually okay to play the suit declarer has pitched) and declarer wins and can either try the K (playing for a 2-2 split) or cross to dummy to play a spade towards hand. Both ways work, but using up dummy's entry is a risk as you give up the way to guess diamonds. I'd cash the K as it will give you information at least for your diamond guess (if they were 3-1, I'd likely finesse the hand with only one spade for the Q). When both opponents follow, declarer can play another spade, ruff a heart, play some more trump until declarer only has 2 trump left and then try exiting a club. The goal isn't to effect some kind of squeeze, but to get a rough count of the hand and see if anyone pitches diamonds.

North opens 1 and South responds 1, the opponents dutifully passing throughout (the best kind of opponents). North now rebids 1 and South is stuck between inviting with 2NT or trying 3. Your choice might depend on your partnership style. Some play that 1 promises an unbalanced hand, while others would bid 1 with any hand featuring four spades. With three suits bid, it frightens me a little to bid notrump without a stopper in the unbid suit so I chose 3. North doesn't have anything extra, so whichever bid South makes will end the auction.

The East hand is a nightmare for anyone who doesn't like to lead away from honors. I'd probably lead either a heart or the A as the unbid suit. Declarer can guess well to make 130 (3 +1) by playing a spade to the 10. There are a few good reasons to guess this correctly: it plays for the aces to be split, it makes life easier for a ruffing finesse later on, you might be able to count out six points already in the East hand, etc. This will outscore those who play in notrump held to 120 on a diamond lead. Note that the proper play in clubs is to start with the A since you can pick up honor-9-7 in West, but not in East and it's also superior against a 4-0 split. The actual holding on this deal can't be picked up for no losers.
