2PassBID

The final contract will be a function of East's second bid. If she passes her side will play in a heart partial. If she issues an invitation her partner will put her in game.

North may take a second bid however we expect most to pass quietly as the hand is aceless.

South will lead a diamond and declarer will win the ace in dummy. She would like to play a high heart from her hand in case the Q is singleton however she has few entries to dummy. So we think most declarers will lead the J. Unfortunately this play will result in the loss of a heart trick as South's 9 has suddenly grown up to be a winner.

East will have an equally difficult time diagnosing the club situation. It turns out the winning play in clubs is to lead twice toward dummy. (It matters not whether declarer first cashes her A.) She must guess to play the 10 if South plays low. This will actually give declarer three club tricks.

For pairs who bid game, this will be a disappointing opening to the afternoon. Those who stop short of game will likely make nine tricks for a plus score.

6NTAll pass

Our auction raises several questions, about partnership agreement and willingness to bid scientifically.

East cannot bid 2 at her second turn as this is a reverse and shows extra values. A 2NT bid by East depends upon partnership agreement. Some pairs use the 2NT to show either 12 - 14 or 18 - 19 HCPs. If your agreement is the latter then East must bid 2 at her second turn.

West knows her side belongs in slam. Is there any value in checking for aces and kings? Perhaps, is the correct answer on this board. West learns her partner does not have the K so she will settle for 6NT, the optimum matchpoint place to play.

Declarer will win the opening lead in hand and try the spade finesse. She will place the Q on the table and let it ride if North does not cover. Regardless of North's action declarer will bring the spade suit home for five tricks. She has three hearts and she will discover she has three diamonds when the missing diamond honors fall. She also has four club tricks for a total of 15 tricks.

Don't bother calling the director when the scoring machine at your club will not allow you to enter three overtricks on this contract!!

North uses Checkback Stayman or New Minor Forcing to ask partner for either four hearts or three spades. South denies either holding so North bids the notrump game

North's inquiry gives West some information about the board. North must hold either four hearts, five spades or both lest she would not have made the inquiry. West might have lead a heart without that information. In fact she may still lead a heart, which would be unfortunate for her side. Any lead but a diamond will give declarer an opportunity for an overtrick.

Knowing that it may not be right to lead a heart West may try a diamond. This will give her side three diamond tricks regardless how declarer plays the suit. East has the A for the fourth defensive trick.

On the heart lead declarer will win. The most likely way to play the spades is to take the A and then run the J. When the spade suit splits in declarer's favor she will have five spade tricks. She can now play on clubs to win two clubs tricks. The defense may switch to diamonds however it's too late. South has her 10 tricks for an excellent matchpoint score.

East may lead a spade. Her preferred lead is a club however we don't see that lead from an unsupported ace.

North will try for 12 tricks on this board. She will win the opening lead to play a diamond then cash the A (discarding a club) and ruff a spade to ruff a diamond. She will ruff a third spade followed by ruffing a third diamond. She can ruff yet another spade and ruff her fourth diamond.

She cashes the A and exits dummy with a club.

East is endplayed and must return either a club or a heart to declarer who can now draw the remaining trump.

Shortness in partner's suit is usually not an asset so South goes quietly when she learns of the heart fit and bits game, not having visions of a slam for her side.

East may lead a diamond as nothing else stands out.

Declarer must decide whether to go after spades or clubs. On this layout spades is the winner as the suit can be established with two ruffs. If North goes after spades she will win 12 tricks in the form of four spades, two spade ruffs, four hearts, one diamond and one club.

Interestingly if North goes after clubs she too will win 12 tricks. She can lead a club toward dummy. If East ducks declarer can draw trump, ending in her hand and repeat the club play. If East again ducks, declarer will call fora club establishing the suit and she can get to dummy by ruffing a spade. She needs to be careful handling her communication however she should win four clubs, one diamond, one spade, four hearts and two ruffs (either spades in one hand or diamonds in the other.) Note that she cannot ruff both spades and diamonds and still maintain trump control.

Pass1NT2BID

This will prove to be a difficult board for NS to handle if East interferes. What's your partnership philosophy? Do you like to punish opponents who interfere in your auction or do you continue on to your game?

South has a decision to make at her turn to bid. Her partner has opened 1NT and East will show diamonds (according to her partnership methods.) Does South prefer to play the doubled contract or does she do on to find a game? The fact that she holds five diamonds suggests the hand may be a misfit and perhaps there is benefit to her side to defend.

Another issue is the methodology your partnership employs to deals with interference. Many use Lebensohl . If the partnership uses lebensohl then South will try 3 if she wants to move forward. This asks for a major suit and promises a stopper in diamonds. (The partnership does not have a major suit fit but this auction will get them to 3NT.) South will double for penalty if the partnership plays lebensohl and she decides to punish East.

East will not be happy she'd bid. The defense will win three spades and should also manage to win three clubs. If they are not careful then North may crash her partner's king. The defense will also get three diamonds. East must play the suit from her hand so North will score her K. South can patiently wait for her two diamond tricks.

Declarer can save one diamond losers if she can diagnose the diamond layout. If she cashes the ace and continues with a small diamond she will only lose two diamonds. Should she cash the ace and continue with a diamond honor she will lose three diamonds.

If North declares at 3NT she should succeed in her contract. She has four spades and three clubs. She will win one heart. If East leads a diamond and North will win one trick in the suit.

We don't often put partner in game with a singleton in her suit however when that singleton is an ace the raise is to be considered.

Even if North doesn't bid the spade game South may persist and bid it herself.

West will lead a heart honor. South will win the trick in dummy and immediately lead a diamond. If East hops up with the A and returns a heart the defense will have two tricks. If East ducks declarer will avoid the loss of a diamond. However she must still lose one heart and she will either lose one club or if she ruffs her third club in dummy she will lose a spade trick. Regardless, South will lose two tricks.

West will reverse to show extras. When she rebids her hearts East will raise her to game knowing her side has an eight card heart fit.

North would prefer to not be on lead as she does not have a lead she likes. After some consideration we think North will lead a club. (It's often dangerous to lead from a KJ combination so we don't think North will lead a diamond.)

Declarer must decide whether North is leading away from the king or the jack. If she determines the lead is from the jack then playing dummy's 10 is a winner. She will be able to discard her losing diamond and fourth spade on the clubs. On this layout if she plays the Q declarer will later discard one of her losers on the A but she will only win 10 tricks as she must lose one heart, the K and either a diamond or a spade.

Declarer's better option is to rise with the A. She can now lead a heart toward her hand. She will lose one heart trick. She can later lead a diamond toward dummy. If North rises with her king declarer will have a place to discard her losing spade. If North ducks, declarer will not lose a diamond. Either line take her to 11 tricks.

A civil auction gets EW to the spade game. The general rule is that 4 - 4 fits play better 5 - 3 however on this board this is not the case as declarer must lose the same three tricks whether the partnership is in spades or hearts.

Let's not help declarer and assume that South leads a diamond. The trick will be won in dummy. Declarer will cash the ace and king of trump learning that she has two spade losers. (Play will be slightly easier if she cashes the king before the ace however the outcome will be the same.) Declarer can now cash two high hearts. North will ruff. East will learn of the bad split and that she needs to continue the suit by leading from her hand and finessing if necessary.

East will win the return. (If North exits a diamond declarer can insert the Q and ruff South's king if necessary.) She will come ti her hand with a club and lead a heart. North can take her last trump at her leisure.

Note that if West is declarer in 4 she may lose control of the board. North will lead a spade. If declarer wins in hand and continues by playing two rounds of hearts, discovering the bad split, she cannot get to dummy safely. If she leads a club, North will rise with the ace to continue spades. South will ruff dummy's A. Declarer will lose one club and three spades.

  1. Control bid

There are 12 tricks on this board regardless of whether NW are in hearts, spades or notrump.

The difficult part is getting to the slam. We offer one auction which will get the pair to the spade slam. One North shows three card spade support South starts cuebidding her controls. She can't use Blackwood since if North shows two aces or keycards, South does not know whether her side has a club stopper. The only way to determine whether North has a club control is to cuebid. So South will show her diamond control and North will show a heart control. South will show a second diamond control. Since South freely bid past game she must be wondering about the club control which she has denied by skipping that suit. So North knows to bid the spade slam since she holds the ever important A.
